Where do you plan to fish, what do you hope to catch? You can find decent spinning rod combos for about $75 for freshwater. I am not a salt water guy, sorry.
You may have to provide more info about the stuff you already have for us to give you better info.

Freshwater or saltwater, you can do it for $100.00 bucks per/combo, if you get heavy freshwater gear, that will work for saltwater. Depends where you are fishing and your target fish.

You might go to Amazon and just window shop there for prices. I believe Flyguy is on target with the prices he quotes. You will always see more items you'd like to have, but take it slow at first. Most fishermen have more
'stuff' than they will ever use. Just Sayin...RJS

You got some good advice already. I like Pflueger president reels myself for freshwater. how strong a pole you need depends on the fish you or trying to catch. Google and YouTube are great resources there's all kinds of videos on YouTube. they will show you how to rig your line an what colors to use. good luck qn show some pictures when you can

I'm with Flyguy on the price.. $100 will get you a combo that is very serviceable. Just keep one thing in mind. The only person that needs to be happy with the rod/reel is you.. not you buddies, the guy fishing next to you, etc.. The fish never even get the chance to see it till its too late for them!!

Here are a lot of choices. There has been tons of research into each rod and reel on this list. The under $100 are all pretty good and will last if taken care of.

Don't forget about yard sales or estate sales. I've gotten real bargains at them.

You mentioned "all the other little things". That's where you're going to spend money. That decent rod/reel combo is kinda your ticket to buy ALL kinds of other stuff: line, leader, hooks, sinkers, bait, lures, lures and more lures and so on. And for sure after you go out that first time and get skunked (god forbid!) you're gonna want the stuff that people say will catch fish. It adds up, especially since it all looks so good in the store and you just know you're going to need it... But if you stick to the basics for the kind of fishing you want to start with it shouldn't be more than a couple hundred. It's when you decide to do a different kind of fishing that needs different gear, and then you need a boat, and the boat needs stuff...you should be able to get all that done for a couple million. Your best bet to save money is to find someone who already knows what they are doing and get them to take you fishing. Or hire a guide.

I know it's caught me a lot. And then I try to take it all along. So I have to buy tackle boxes. It never ends.

When you say realistic, do you mean budget price realistic? or high end price realistic? or somewhere in the middle realistic?

I'm going to assume you mean budget since maybe you all don't fish that much.

One of the best spinning reels in the budget price range is the Penn Pursuit series, they cost around $60.

One of the best spinning rods for the money is the Ugly Stik Elite series, they cost around $50.

So for around $110 you can get a halfway decent starter fishing set up, unless you really want to go even cheaper, you can get a combo Ugly Stik GX2 spinning combo setup for $50, this will get you started with a rod and a reel.

Of course you have to buy some fishing line, and variety of hooks, weights, and bobbers if you're going to bait fish which is the cheapest way to start. Lure fishing is very expensive and without knowing the proper technique for each lure type you will spend money without success, lure fishing is difficult even with knowing techniques for each lure. You'll also need a tackle box to put your small stuff into, the good one for the money is the Plano Weekend Series, it only cost $20, great starter box.

Of course I'm only making suggestions, others will have other suggestions, you'll need to weigh out these suggestions and decide which might work the best for you.
