A circular crab net with rope works well. Three fastening points on circular net enables you to swim fish over net and pull up.

The nets I have seen used are more like square nets with frames.

These are used for crabbing. It is a circular metal hoop about 3ft in dia. The net is attached to hoop. There are three small ropes, tied 120 degrees apart on hoop that are tied to main rope about 3 ft above net. Having one less rope securing the hoop give less of a chance of your line tangling with attaching ropes and that big one won’t get away.

Put 50-80 braid then pull it up with the line not the pole

I do a lot of pier fishing. I use a 32" landing net with a rope tied to it. It will handle 3 and 4 foot sharks easily. They usually come with 1/4 inch rope but change to at least 3/8. You can get it at Walmart. This is a circle net without a handle. Purchase at bass pro, academy and many other tackle stores. Hope this helps

Hello. I’m recommending that you use a pier drop net to land those large fish. If using a pier net isn’t possible, a 5000-series surf-style reel with a 6’ heavy action rod will do the trick.

You can tie a large treble hook to a length of heavy cordage with a big snap above it. Snap it to your line, lower it, snag the fish and haul it up. Gloves will prevent rope burns if the big guy flops around.

So there’s this pedestrian bridge over a major river in my city that it’s legal to fish on. Fishing from the shore of this river is poor, but fishing from the middle of the river is crazy good. I’ve been targeting these HUGE smallmouth buffalo and catfish all huddled around this pillar in the middle of the water, but the problem is I can’t haul anything more than 10-12lbs up the bridge! Today, I had a giant buffalo on the line that was so heavy as I was trying to pull him up that he snapped my medium heavy rod (authentic series Zebco) clean in half and then broke the brand new 25lb line I had.

Besides that, I couldn’t physically get the reel to turn anymore with deadlifting that much weight (before and after the pole snapped), so after the pole snapped, me and six other people tried to pull him up by hand and then the line snapped. I want to know what kinds of rods can support this level of stress and what reels have true cranking capacity (casting capacity not needed as much), so I can haul these monsters up to the bridge. Walking them to shore is not an option.

I am a small 5’3” woman so I need something with a lot of power to help me out.

Thanks!

Use a three way large gapling hook tied to long rope 1/2". Hang it about 1 1/2' feet in water. guide the fish over the galling hook, then snatch! Works very well. Hope this has been helpful.

On California piers we use hoop nets to bring large fish up to the pier. Useful for most large fish. We used to have a bat ray (mud marlin) derby at Berkeley Pier that was catch and release. We would bring bat rays, some exceeding 100 pounds in weight, up to the pier in a hoop net, weigh and measure it and then return it back to the water via the hoop net. Very easy to use. Promar has a good one.
