Pat Barrett here. While trolling for trout, I accidentally caught a 17 inch walleye. After that, I rigged my boat with walleye equipment, including side view, downview and traditional finder. Now, I'm not catching anything, and can't seem to read my 5 in lowrance finder. I bought a $12 lure to catch walleye, and the first cast I watched it go plunk, and started reeling it in, but the weight just came right up over the side, and I just waved that expensive lure goodbye! Where should I go on Long lake to find those pesky walleye?
If you want walleye--- troll for trout.
If I want hallibut--- I target shovel nosed guitar fish.🙃

It's free! Really not a lure. Just called bait. If it's dead and found along the shore, put it on a hook.

We aren't even allowed to put a 25 cent nightcrawler on the lure hook! NO live bait!

Actually, I spent my kindergarten time in Chula Vista. Mom went to San Diego State to be a teacher. we stayed across the road with a mexican mother and learned NOT to eat the Hot Pepper soup! we did have a cabin cruiser and caught Sharks, Rays, and who knows what. I remember spending time in the hull, throwing up!

Many similar memories here, except I've aĺways had sea legs. One exception-- greasy pork chops for breakfast with a hangover. Mighty messy.

That’s like a joke right?

I do think it's laughable, but they say no live bait for fishing for walleye. You can for trout. So if you're trolling for trout and you catch a walleye with a worm, what do you do throw it back?
Can you use a Senko worm? They look real and you could soak them in tuna oil.

I'll look them up. Thank you

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess you haven’t read or don’t understand what you read in the regs. I do read them from cover to cover and I can’t think of any water in Washington that allows bait fishing (there are places where artificial lures are the only thing you can fish with) where you can’t use a worm. The prohibition of using live bait does not apply to worms and a more careful reading will show you what other live baits can be used. Generally, the regs don’t allow you to use any bait, live bait specifically, other than that which comes from the water you are using it in. It gets a bit more specific than that but that’s the bottom line. Long Lake rules aren’t much different than Columbia River Rules for Walleye and the go to rig for walleye in the main stem Columbia is a bottom walker tipped with a fresh night crawler. In fact just what I would suggest our original questioner try. Along with jigging baits. Walleye like it deep except in low light times of the day when they may come into shallow water. Small plastic soft baits bounced along the bottom can catch them as well. Deep diving plugs that get down towards the bottom can be trolled effectively as well. And it never hurts to add a worm to sweeten the flavors. Maybe off a trailer hook a couple inches back.

I'm with you 100%, Pat, the fact that you can't use minnows for perch or crappie in Washington State drives me crazy 😠.
I fished so many years in Michigan with minnows.... it'll spoil ya for the fun of catching table - fare. Besides, it seems like the only thing they want you to fish for in Washington is rainbow trout, and who wants to eat them 😝? No comparison to walleye, perch, crappie or bluegill 😛.....☘
