Make a change to it, home make it.

Absolutely. Going the lawyer route will probably cost more than buying a new trailer.

Yes, I believe most of us that are posting here agree, you should do some repair, minor modifications, then stamp a serial number on your trailer, and then register it a "home made"! I expect most states would accept that. Just Sayin...RJS

Be real sure there is no vin # stamped on the underside of the frame.
The state police doing inspections really frown on that, then you really pay.

I'm sure it is just coincidental that the judge who is a lawyer suggested you use a lawyer to ease your way through the morass. And then maybe I am being too cynical.

if all else fails get your bill of sale or tell them the trailer was homemade and ask for an open title to get the trailer titled & licensed will take approx 13 working days

Hello, I bought a boat that came with a trailer awhile back. I registered the boat thinking that I would receive boat and trailer permits. I was way wrong! When my boat title came in, I figured that's all I needed. One day I took my boat to a mechanic for some repairs. He noticed that I didn't have a license plate for the trailer. He told me it needed a license plate because it was separate from the boat. Long story short, I have not been able to get a license plate for the trailer. I took it to the county license division and they told me I needed to take it to the police department and have an inspection done. I did that and they said I needed to get it weighed. I did that. The police officer couldn't find a VIN no. on the trailer and it was not homemade. So he filled out a form and sent me to the DOT with the form. The DOT said I needed to go to a County or State judge to get an order for a new VIN no. I tried that and they said I needed a lawyer to help me with the process. I am in limbo from so much runaround that I don't know what to do anymore. This seems so unfair. I am stuck with a boat that I cannot use because of this. I guess the moral of the story is make sure when you buy a boat with a trailer, make sure they also have a title for the trailer.
