Something has been bugging me... Jigs

How do you actually fish with jigs?

Ive seen jigs with skirts, sometimes people attached a soft plastic bait at the end. Ive seen jigs that have a weight at the front that looks like an eye and a hook at the end. I assume that I should be attaching a plastic to this. When should I use one type of jig over the other?

I've also heard people say the word jigging. Is that simply fishing with a jig, Or is it a fishing technique? On that note, how should I be working the jig, steady retrieve, hopping it along the bottom?

It depends a lot on what type of fish you are fishing for. I fish for salmon and steelhead and have used jigs under a bobber for both and been very successful at catching fish with them. They now have twitching jigs which you jig with your pole to move the jig up and down for salmon. It works just like jigging for bass. Jigging has been around for years for bass fishing. You should check out some YouTube videos on jig fishing for the species you are wanting to fish for.

It depends on the type of jigging your doing, flipping, pitching or even docks, trees, weeds, different types of jigs for different purposes
