There are millions fishing each season in the United States. With this vast number of fisherman, there must be an awareness of how important conservation is!
Here is a Sportsman Creed I found in an old book…..I guess some things never change!
A sportsman will kill few fish, a much smaller number than the law allows; and liberate uninjured all smaller ones. This isn’t just a matter of consideration of others…..the little fish you toss back this season is the big one you will catch next season.
A sportsman will not, for the purpose of staying below his legal limit of catch, release a fish so hooked that a fatal injury has been caused.
A sportsman will not intentionally use tackle, if any, opportunity to escape if the angler plays his part un-skilfully; he will use the lightest tackle that he considers advisable considering the size fish he is likely to hook, where he is fishing, and his experience in playing fish.
A sportsman will not go fishing for food alone.
A sportsman will not interfere with another sportman’s fishing: nor will he hog a pool.
A sportsman so conducts himself toward the property of another that the owner will welcome…..not forbid- future fisherman. In short, a sportsman will follow the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Nice ! Too bad all fishermen don't follow this creed.
Thanks for the post.
That Golden Rule could be used more wide spread.
Sorry for the drift.
Thanks for posting the Creed.
Just one question on the creed mentioned. I am a little lost on one creed ( A sportsman will not go fishing for food alone ) I am not a catch and release person I go to put food on the table and do release anything that is not legal. Therefore I am lost on this one creed. Would you all enlighten me?

Id like to show that to the ass hats thatvi caught checking my jugs last week.
I suspect the word Sportsman is the real catch point on this subject .
I think the point the framer(writer) was trying to make is all related to the meaning of what a "SPORTSMAN" Is.
Way back in the day, there were two kinds of people that fish. A meat fisherman, and a sport fisherman.
Fishing for something to eat was not considered to be part of what a sporty fisherman does.
I agree with you and truly enjoy a freshly caught fish, as long as it is legal.
The only fish I release is a MUSKY. I never eat them. I also do not eat smallmouth bass or carp. Also, a lot depends on the clarity of the water where I caught the fish, as well.

Thanks for looking.....Good fishing!
Thank you both on clearing that up for me. It all makes sense now. Sometimes I can read and read again and it doesn't register. Simple as mentioning the word sportsman it worked. Thanks again.

My rule is always leave it better than I found it.
As a rule, I generally 'catch and release most species; with trout, it depends more on the general condition of the fish, as they tend to be more 'fragile' than most other species ! If it looks like it may not survive after being released, I'll keep it for the skillet or give it to a close friend or neighbor who likes fish ! As for others fishing nearby who may not practice 'sports-manlike' conduct or who exceed the legal catch limit, I have the phone number for Arizona Game and Fish 'Game Thief' in my phone on speed dial and will not hesitate to report any illegal activity, making sure they get a good description of the violators, their vehicle, license plate and location ! If you can't follow simple conservation rules/laws, then you just don't belong out there !
