The Boatlift

How the people of NY came together.

The epic story of the 9/11 boatlift that evacuated half a million people from the piers and seawalls of Lower Manhattan. The American spirit and resilience is shown in โ€œBoatliftโ€, narrated by Tom Hanks. I had no idea that the 9/11 boat evacuation was larger than the evacuation at Dunkirk during World War Two and they completed it so fast. Everyone who participated in the search and rescue operation on 9/11 and the days after is a true hero.

That story is very good and well done. Liked the part where the guy said "There is hero in each of us". So true. You never know what you are capable of until your back is against the wall.

My client Ted Maloney was excited to go to work that week. He was young and newly married. He had just bought his first house. His wife was pregnant with their first child and he was excited about it. He had landed a new job with a company that was opening a branch in his hometown, Darien.
I remember he said, โ€œ I will be able to ride my bike to work and come home for lunch! Only one bummer I have to train at the World Trade Center. โ€œ
On his second day he rose early to
Catch the train to the WTC. He waved at me as he drove past my office. That was Tuesday the day of the attack. He never came home.
His first daughter was born months later and her mother named her Ted after her father.
Being in Ct in a bedroom community of NYC there were a lot of local people who lost their lives that day.
Several people rose to help the victims who were mostly widows. I remember one in particular. A local oil company delivered free heating oil to the widows for a year after the tragedy.
Every 9/11 Iโ€™m reminded of that sad day and how a young mans promising life was stolen from him.
And not his alone. The other victims and their families and friends.

Thanks for that story, Mauwehu. A lot of people know what happened, but really don't know the effects of people who lost family and loved ones.
