Invade Mexico?

It seems that every 150 years or so, some of the leadership of the United States has the wacky notion of taking over Mexico by military force and making that country part of the United States!
As far as I can determine, this equation was first discussed in some written correspondence between President Andrew Jackson and Governor Sam Houston in the period after Texas entered the Union. Nothing ever happened then, and it was soon became obvious the United States was clearly unable to manage its own affairs and was quickly proving that by the outbreak of the War between the States.
Well, just as then the U.S. was not able to demonstrate it was able to manage its own affairs in a satisfactory manner and the exact same thing is true just as much today as it was in the 1850’s.
Now, I am not belittling the power of the U.S. Military in its role if we were to actually invade Mexico. I expect that the shock of this act alone would reverberate through out Central America and South America as well. I am not in any sense a military strategist, but it seems rather clear that guerrilla tactics similar to that used by North Viet Nam would be employed by Mexico and given the vast size and topography of this country would make pacification next to impossible.
As we have witnessed over the past two or three decades, Mexico has been unable to gain and keep control over the proliferation of drug gangs. Due to the vast amount of money that flows from the U.S. to those gangs, it has been an impossible equation even with the help of the U.S.
Let us clean up our own mess in this country before we attempt in any fashion to even give advice, much less offer physical interference to help Mexico. After all, if it were not for the lucrative markets for illegal drugs here, there would not be the existence of the number and size of the drug cartels there. If we could get control of the illegal markets here, it would decapitate the head of this monster. That would go a long way in solving both nation’s problems.
Think of the tragedy of the casualty lists of such an invasion of a friendly neighbor, it would be tragic, and the uproar would likely be greater than that surrounding the Viet Nam involvement.
After all, Mexico is our Amigos. To invade a friendly neighbor country would be tantamount to the scheming of Adolph Hitler in the 1930’s that started World War II.. I suspect any administration that did that would get impeached! Or should be. We already have a copious quantity of problems, our plate is heaping full, and no one in their right mind would seek more. Just Sayin….RJS

I think you might have misunderstood what Robert was saying. Do you think it would be a good idea to invade and attack Mexico? I don’t. My interpretation of what Robert is saying is it’s not a good idea to do that. I don’t think any of us have much of a problem with Mexico or the Mexican people. I know I don’t.
