Bass stole my plopper

Was out this afternoon and caught a decent sized smallmouth bass. I had a couple snags, and had another bass on the line around a fallen tree. I was in my raft so I put my rod down to paddle in a little closer and, once I picked my rod up again, it had gone slack. I assumed the bass had spat out the plopper but upon reeling it in I felt nothing. I was using 8lb mono so I'm assuming the snags may have weakened it as the bass didn't seem that large.

I was searching around the tree, hoping that it got caught on it, of course it wasn't there. I paddled around the area and sure enough, spotted the bass with my lure dangling out of its mouth. I tied on a spinnerbait hoping I could hook it again, nothing, jerkbait, nope, crankbait, nada. After about an hour attempting to catch it, I gave up.

My questions are, do bass generally hang out in the same spot? Is it possible to hook it again on another day? I'm assuming it won't go after a plopper again. I obviously would like to get my plopper back but I do have others, I just feel bad for the fish. I've read that it takes a very long time for it to rust and fall out naturally.

There have been times where a person catches a fish with another lure in it's mouth. So yes someone can catch a fish with another lure in it's mouth but intentionally catching a specific fish is pretty hard to do. Good luck and let us know.

I've found lots of lures over the years and none of them had a fish attached to them. Usually the hook will enlarge the hole in the mouth and come out by itself or the hook rots away and falls out. I can honestly say, I've never found a dead fish with a hook or lure deep in its mouth, or a live one for that matter.

The whopper plopper is a floating bait. Hopefully this fish is strong enough to clear the bait soon.On the upside, if it is strong enough , theoretically just by swimming the bait ( hooks) can make a hole in the fishes mouth large enough to float free. On the down side , Larry dahlberg puts some really good hooks on those baits, and if the bait is lodged in the fishes mouth , there is the real possibility it will die. It has been my experience bass usually hit a whopper plopper in the head, like they are trying to kill it. I say this because every bass I have ever caught had the forward hook in its mouth and the rear hook stuck elsewhere....My 2cents
