Used whopper plopper first time this morn. Not sure it was working right. First 20 yds of retrieve it was under water then surfaced and made noise. Had fish hit when it was stopped but never moving. Is this correct?
Goggle walk the dog fishing. That will answer your question.

Squeak,
Do you think that your line may have been fouled in your front hook. That will cause it to dive.
It did it every cast. Been watching you tube. I had a snap swivel on most guys dont. That may be a problem.

Flourcarbon sinks. Maybe you need to change lines?
It’s not the swivel nor the type line you use it’s just sometimes it dives a bit before getting up on the top I use it quite often it happens, stopped, starting, don’t matter when it catches it’s that it catches a lot of fish remember Fishon Fishon!!!!
I stop the line or click the bail before it hits the surface that way it just sets. As soon as it touches start reeling. You don't want it to plunge cuz it does sink. After 3 cast you have it figured out even on a real long cast you can click the Bell soon as it touches and get that sucker moving. Starting and stopping is not the best in my experience that thing's making enough noise and commotion to just relax trade in you could slow it down but don't stop
DO NOT use snap swivel or Fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon sinks and will mess the action up on any type of top water lure, and a swivel adds nothing but extra hardware. Try Power Pro braid and when the bait hits the water let it set for a few seconds so it will be in the right position to start. I always start with my rod tip up so as to get the line off the water and the lure started correctly.
I've had a couple of wp's in the tackle box for a while. Lost one after three casts on a snag and was holding the other in reserve, gunshy at losing another expensive lure in the wrong situation... Last night I was fishing a river and had caught some nice bass - as well as nice crappie, small bass and sunnies with delusions of grandeur - and as it got darker, seemed like the time with bigger fish moving in to try my remaining wp. A few casts with nothing, then on the fourth or fifth cast I'd walked it across the river and fairly close to me a nice bass nailed it right outside a weed bed. Landed her and was sold - got to see the whole thing on the surface, it was awesome.
My observation, using flouro and a shackle: I noticed it sank on impact so started waiting after it hit the water for it to float back up. Also, kept my rod tip high to keep the line out of the water for the most part, which maybe mitigated the use of flouro.
The day I used it no fish hit it while it was moving and plopping only setting still. Was happy with results it caught fish. Action just didn't seem right to me?
I use it with 8lb mono and hold rod tip up works well and they kill it.
