Grizz I almost said that exact same thing but opted not to. I used it almost daily growing up as a kid. It was the only rod n reel I had. A little cleaning and lubing should do the trick. Hopefully it won’t need any parts, I’m sure they don’t make parts for it any longer.

I have a Shamino 2000. Just went and looked and difference between mine and picture above is mine has the drag adjust on the spool face.

This reel hasn’t been used for at leased 45-50 years and is needing cleaned and lubed. I had forgot I had this reel. I must’ve been hard on it cause it looks well used.

Buck - wow, what a treasure! This thread has sure turned up some gems. If nothing else, some pretty old gear got to see the light of day again. They deserved that.

I had occasion to do a little reel/rod swapping today due to a sudden influx of new reels. I picked up this old, old reel and I thought as long as I was tinkering around anyway, I'd clean it up. We used to call these "trigger reels". You pull the trigger and it opens the bail. It is a Shimano IX 4000 and I'm sure it is 20 years old, possibly 30. One of my kids must have bought it for me because I would never have bought it for myself. I didn't use it often, but for me that might be 10 years of use from the average weekend fisherman. I liked the fact it had a rear drag setting knob, but the thing weighs about a ton and doesn't balance well on any rod I've had it on. BUT, I popped the side cover on the old thing and I was totally amazed. There was no foreign debris in it, the metal gears are bright and sharp and when I extracted the nearly solidified grease the thing was as smooth as a Swiss watch. I wish the picture showed how nice it really is. It has a couple boat dings in it, but I'm afraid it will outlast me by decades. Maybe stuff was just better back then, you recon? Nice to see it has aged so well.

I don't think I have any reels I used that are that old, but I have a lazy Ike and dare devil. Dad bought in the mid 50s and caught his first fish on a lure (walleye) . They were the first lures I ever caught a fish on (LMB). I plan to take my grandson out with them. I thought it would be fun if he caught his first lure fish on them. If I still have them after that trip, I expect they will end up in a shadow box with brass plaque.

Thats what they're for Rut. I had two zebco 202's back in the ear9 60's. I caught many catfish n carp on the rascals. One night i hooked something i couldn't stop. I tightened it down but it stripped the gears. Then the went to nylon gears. Not near as good. This is the reel that was on the boat rod i got out of a free box in a guys yard. From what I've from it was made in early 80's. Got a nice 7' two pc Berkley B26 fiberglass rod i cleaned up. Haven't tried it yet. I'll be stopping anywhere i see fishing gear now. 🎣🎣

Thanks Kandy. I cleaned the Mitchell 300A up put it on the Berkley i found. Then i remembered why i quit using it. It has a bar that prevents the bail from being closed by hand. I put it back in the drawer. I'm guessing the 9' rod is a handful for you 😀. Have a nice day stay safe 😄😄

I list alot of my gear in late 80's. Went fishing with girlfriends brother. He got drunk swamped the boat. I lost 2 rods n most of my tackle. Had a Rapala anniversary knife set. Fillet knife n camp knife. I was ready to drown him. 😠

I've got an old reel like that. Garcia Mitchel 606. Put it on a broken rod trying to make an down rigger out of it. Have five or six other old reels also. Have a few other old reels beside these. Can't find my old Zebco Direct drive, got it in 1965. Around here somewhere.

Don't know what the top left is and no idea where I got it. Top center is a Daiwa J-25, not a clue where it came from. Top right is my Mitchell 300, had it many many years. Bottom left is a Pflueger Rocket # 1855 and bottom right is a Shakespeare Direct drive mod ED. All of them still work very well!

The Mitchell 300 was far better than the 300A.

I've had several of the old 300's. Couple were 300 half bails. My mind I want to think they were the best ever but in reality I have to believe some of the newer reels are maybe better reels. Need to admit to a personal attachment to old Mitchell's!

Grizz I have a Mitchell 402 saltwater spinning reel on a 9’ rod I bought in 73. It’s caught a lot of fish. It’s gotten a little finicky over the last 4-5 years. My grandson was using it and had problems with it and started jerking on the bail and screwed it up. Took me quite a while to straighten it out. They don’t make parts for it any longer. I still use it though.
