Did my second spinning session today using a soft plastic lure on a fast flowing river and managed to lose 3 lures from snags, is it normal to lose such a large amount or am I doing something wrong/just been unlucky? What can I do to avoid snags? I’m using a spinning rod and reel with 10lbs braid so I doubt it’s the fault of my equipment

Find a new spot is all I can suggest. Current can be tough as snags can be anywhere.

Sometimes you have to match terminal gear to the fishing conditions as well as the fish. If it's a rocky bottom with a lot of current use something that will float up off the bottom and still be of interest to the fish. If you are bait fishing then use something like a Santee Cooper rig with a breakaway sinker. If the weight gets snagged a lighter line can break and the bait part of the rigs floats free.

Steelhead fishermen here in Oregon use a slip bobber. I tried it on bass one time in the John Day River and caught a few.

I was using that same rig 60+years ago never heard it called Santee Cooper rig where did that name come from
