I keep getting this add for an "entry level" Rolex. $7,000. Right. I'm gonna rush right out and get me one of them bad boys. I wore a Seiko that my wife got me for Christmas about 50 years ago, til it stopped working. Then she bought me a Citizen and now I wear that. If it weren't for her I'd probably not have one at all. Only one reason that I know of why a person would wear a Rolex. Well I guess two. If Kathe ever bought me one, I'd wear it. After I asked her to return it.

I inherited a Rolex from my dad who passed away a couple years ago. He'd gotten it from his dad more than 60 yrs. ago as a graduation gift after medical school. I wear it on occasion because it reminds me of him.

Well, I have seen a large number of sold gold Rolex watches here on men in Houston. On my 65 birthday I decided I wanted to have a 'dress watch' but I would never wear a gold Rolex. Why? I know personally two people who were shot and robbed due to their wearing a gold Rolex. One man died, the other recovered. It is a sure signal to others and now considering that your cell phone provides all the time keeping one needs, I chose a Baum Marcier tank type watch which is not noticable and yells 'rob me' like a gold Rolex. Just Sayin...RJS

I believe that buying/wearing/driving
anything that costs an outrageous amount of money is referred to as
'conspicuous consumption' !

That said, if I ever hit a big lottery jackpot I would definitely own a
stable of hot cars (and a couple of nice boats); not for show, but
because I'm a 'car guy' who would
be trying to make up for lost time !

I am a lazy sob. If I were to win a huge amount of money, I wouldn't own a damn thing except for my house my clothes and my fishing stuff. I would rent anything else I needed and let someone else worry about the maintenance.

I'm with you first why in the world do I care what time it is anyway? And even if I do want to know the time it is on my cell phone, my car dash board, my tv, microwave, computer and everywhere. I'd rather spend the $7,000 on something I really need like a new boat (or maybe just the down payment on one) so I could go out and fish not caring what time it is.

It's for rich people to show off and stick it in our face or for stupid people to show off and be in debt. I rarely wear a watch for all the above reasons, but when I do it's my $12 KISS watch which gets more attention than a Rolex.

I wouldn't buy anything that I didn't always want/wait for or need, but
I would get certain medical issues remedied (new 'uppers'/lose excess weight) and replenish my wardrobe
a bit - haven't owned/worn decent (casual/sporty/dressy) clothes in
over 20 years ! Have only bought
what was needed, when it was
needed !

The cars are a must - as stated, an
urgent need to make up for lost
time ! A few classics and muscle-
cars, and at least one 'exotic'
(Bentley) ! Only two boats, though -
a 60's-style Chris-Craft mahogany speedboat and a Boston Whaler-
type, center console fishing boat !
For that, I would need a lakeside property for the boat-house and
ready access to fishing ! That mini-
mansion on Welcome Island at
Lake Winnipesaukee would be
ideal !

A few small toys (fishing gear
and a few guns), and one big
(very expensive) toy called a
'Sea Breacher' !

(Hey ! I can dream, can't I ?
Or has that been banned/
abolished as well ? - Gotta
have SOME fun with all that
cash before I 'go' !)

Well, ever since I was out of college and the Air Force, I was able to win all my watches and never bought a new one until I was 65 when I finally bought a modestly expensive dress watch trhat I still wear, but it is not one that shouts, "rob me" I'm a $ 10,000 or higher Rolex. You guys talking about $7,000 watch are either out of date or talking about something other than solid gold Rolex. Just Sayin...RJS

The one they were advertising was not gold at all - it was stainless steel. It's the datejust and they go for right around 6 or 7 thousand. They did call it an "entry level" as I said in my original post. I was just wondering why I was targeted for that particular add, as there is no way in hell I would ever buy something like that.

Time is very important. Your stomach is the best device ever made for telling time. When you are hungry it's time to eat. Beyond that, time doesn't mean much!
