I usually just fish in Lake Erie so I was wondering if a bait caster would be good for this any species?

My opinion is no, use a M action spinning rod/reel combo and you should be able to handle most everything that swims in Erie.
I use them for everything. Different strength for the lure/bait I am using. H to MH to M to L action on the rod. I do use spinning tackle but I can use bait casters due to how long I have fished. You need to adjust the reel to the lure weight and use the corresponding rod.
No, and I say that from a purely maintenance view. Reels require a certain level of maintenance, especially if you fish salt water, although I recall when I lived in Wisconsin that algae was as hard on reels as salt. To really get into a baitcaster you're going to have to get into both ends of the reel and some pretty intricate parts. If you have the time and can keep up a schedule, they will be fine, but neglect them and they will fail in a heart beat.
