Right hand or left handed reel?
My first bait caster was left handed because I got it for pitching plastics and jigs, and wanted to be able to quickly engage and set the hook if needed without having to cast and then switch hands before I could do anything. It was pretty natural after using spinning reels for a few years.

I am left handed and when I was growing up, I got used to using the right handed reel. That was the only one my relatives had and I was the only lefty that I knew of and I didn't know that there was a left handed reel.
My grandfather was a lefty so I grew up reeling spinning and bait cast with my right hand. I’m right handed. Cast right reel right. Have done it all my life.
I can use right or left handed reels with no problem. I usually bring left and right handed reels when I go fishing. Like what was mentioned above use what's comfortable
I use left handed BC reels and even change my spin cast to left hand retrieve. I grew up using right hand reels and used them ok, but they never felt "right" to me. I was about 15 or 16 when I got to use a left handed reel and suddenly everything felt perfect to me. I am right handed but am also ambidextrous to a big degree. So now things work perfect for me anyway with the left handed reels though I can use a righty with now problems.
If you grow up casting lures for bass with spin gear in the USA, and you are right handed, its much easier to learn to reel with your left hand, so your good right hand is always on the rod, as I do now using both spin or fly gear.
Never really got into baitcasters.
But here in NZ, most fly or spin guys, cast with their right hand , but then change hands so they can reel with the right hand also. I love to kid them about it, saying they wouldn’t make good muslims!
Yea, I have seen that with the fly guys. The spin guys have gotten used to being able to change over but there is still a bunch that use the right hand reels and cast then change over to reel with the right. But cant do it now. Got a cheap reel a while back for my daughter who is right handed. Couldn't find one that had a left had retrieve. So she ended up with a lot better reel with left hand retrieve and she loved it. Then she dropped it over the side of the boat. Oh well.
My fly reel has a left hand, so I cast with my left and feed the line with right and when I get a catch I switch the rod to my right and reel it in with my left. If that make sense.
Fly reels aren't "handed", just switch spool retrieval direction.
I have been using spin cast reels and just starting bait casting. I'm wondering the same thing, left or right crank for flipping or pitching. Does the crank on the left get in the way while flipping with the right hand???
I haven't noticed the handle getting in the way when flipping with my right hand. Its actually a quicker retrieve and control with the handle set for left hand as you can take control immediately rather than having to switch the pole to your other hand. Makes it so much easier for sure.
I believe most people are r/handed which makes the r/handed reels easier for them to have better control of there drag systems on their reels. That’s reason for for my r/hand reels. (Tight Lines)
You could be right. Never noticed that myself, though I am r/handed. But that could just be myself. Interesting discussion this.
I HAVE BOTH, USE BOTH AND CAUGHT A FISH ON BOTH THURSDAY. ONE ON A LEFT HAND USING CHROME WITH BLUE BACK RATTLE TRAP AND ONE ON A RIGHT HAND USING A WORM. USE BOTH AND ENJOY IT.
