How do I hold a cat fish with out getting barbed?

Are their whiskers dangerous to touch?

Can I just hold them like a bass?

Depends on the size but you can grab them by the mouth. I suggest wearing a glove though as they do have a bunch of small teeth and they will clamp down on your hand and fingers. Not hard enough to do harm though. Their whiskers won’t hurt you

You gotta get stabbed a few times first, you'll know how to hold them after that

And if you do get stabbed or gigged by them, rub your wound on their underbelly it eases the burning pain.....

Keep you hands away from those pectoral fins. They have a spine that is VERY SHARP and is covered (in most catfish) with a toxin that increases blood flow. Not a poison, but very painful and it can cause an allergic reaction. Those whiskers are what he uses to taste his dinner - they are not dangerous at all.
Catfish gots no teeth, but the inside of their mouths is like sandpaper - very abrasive and a big fish can do some damage if you're not careful.

I stuck my thumb in the first Channel cats mouth I caught. That will never happen again, I don't have gloves! Never tried it on anything other than bullheads but here goes. Slide your hand up the cats back running that top fin between the middle of your fingers, then with the fingers on each side hook those sharp fins with the fingers and pull back. You then somehow have complete control of the fish and won't get stuck. Better yet after putting a thumb in that first cats mouth I got home and ordered one of those tools that you hook the fish's jaw with And use it to pick them up now!

If they are small like bull heads make a V with your 2 fingers. Slide them forward from the tail to get the top barb between them, then CAREFULLy grip around the barbs near his mouth.

I love catching catfish. I normally grab them by the bottom lip with my thumb on the inside of their mouth and my other fingers on the bottom outside of the mouth. If you lift them up this way and use the weight of the fish to hold their mouth open, they will not be able to close their mouth. A glove does help to prevent any injury to your hand.

This how you hold a small catfish. I haven’t been stung since I was a teenage. Use gloves for big ones an hold them by grabbing the lower jaw.
