Bass fishing: Is there any topwater more effective/fun to use than the whopper plopper?
I like the Devil's Horse or a rapala twitched on top.
I like the super spook, and the one that gets the most action for me is the one they sell as saltwater. It has red eyes.
With hollow body frogs, I'd suggest putting a few bb's in the body, just a little more of an attractant. Good luck.

I agree I put the little round bells you get at CHRISTMAS time in the frogs for something different without weighing the frog down worm rattle also work

I figured with those forward fins it was basically a popper on steroids. I use topwater noisemakers (WP, props, poppers) primarily as spybait since from my experience, they're not as productive, at least in my usual waters, as other presentations, which I then follow it up with. Do you retrieve the jitterbug like a popper?
I usually dont use it like a popper I just cast it out and a slow steady retrive seems to work for me sometimes I'll stop it to mix it up some but the steady retrive is what they will usually hit

I have tried buzz baits, which to me seem like a cheap, dated version of the whopper plopper but idk. It makes a cool sound, but unlike the plopper it sinks and so if you don’t start reeling before it hits the water you get hung up, as you are hitting the bank pretty much exclusively with top (at least I am.)
I have a spook puppy that I still haven’t even broken out yet because they can’t leave the whopper plopper alone. The loon 90 gets smacked ridiculously hard, all day everyday. I’ve heard walking the dog is difficult from a kayak too. What do you use?

Yes there is… Double Plopper 180…👍🏻👍🏻
The River2Sea Double Plopper 180 is a 1 3/8 ounce dual buzz bait with plopper tails instead of traditional buzz blades.
Floating action allows a wide variety of retrieve styles.
Almost totally weedless with twin arms that split and separate vertical cover like reeds and tulles.
Extremely versatile surface lure with a loud plopping sound.
Available in 10 colors and equipped with a #6/0 River2Sea Big Bite 2X Strong Hook.
The River2Sea Double Plopper 180 is a dual buzz bait with plopper tails instead of traditional buzz blades. If you like the Whopper Plopper and buzz baits you'll love the Double Plopper! Just imagine a lure with not one, but two counter rotating plopper blades that create twice the magic plopper sound! Plus, it's almost totally weedless even in the thickest cover, is a deadly hooker, and can be fished at speeds from a burn to a crawl, EVEN A DEAD STOP because IT FLOATS!
Twin arms split and separate vertical cover like reeds, emergent weeds, or brush tops without getting hung up, leaving behind an irresistible double bubble trail. You can creep and crawl it over mats, plop and stop it in the pockets, slow roll it down the alleys or bomb and buzz it over weed or stump flats, all are sure to get a strike. Plus, you can stop and go, twitch and burp, or any other combination of retrieve techniques not available in other weedless buzz baits because they don't float. Works great fished with a soft plastic trailer or with an added stinger hook to nab those pesky short strikers. Overall, Double Plopper just might be the most versatile surface lure you've ever used.

Thanks, Fred. Appreciate the tips! So it naturally wiggles on a straight retrieve, you don't have to walk the dog?
Nope, straight retrieve. Vary your speed at first until you hear the gurgle. Stick with that speed.

I've seen these I think at BPS but thought at the time I would probably also attach a trailing treble to each of the wingmen, plus I hadn't read/seen anything if they actually caught fish.
.
Rebel PopR, Buzz bait, Zara Spook are all as good or better to me. I have had explosive hits on all 3 baits. Whopper is good but no better than the others. Mainly just something newer.

I use jointed rapalas. The floating kind. Just reel it fast enough to make it work. Bass slam the tar out of em.
I had forgot about the Rapalas which are super top waters especially in ponds. A friend has about a 10 acre pond and the big bass love the jointed Rapalas. Caught fish up and over 8lbs on the Rapalas reeled really slow.
Whopper plopper is good at times
Other times I want something more subtle.
Hollow body frogs and the lucky craft Gunfish 115 gets em.
I prefer the gunfish over the spook but they are both fine lures
Here is a tip you may not know. If you are throwing a topwater bait and a fish “ misses “ it, immediately throw a senko or other soft lasting type bait to the same area, close as you can get to where the “ miss” took place. And then get ready. There is a good chance the bass is still in the area and will try to eat the senko......My 2cents....

It depends on what type of cover you're fishing around. On the edge of a weed line, I cast it as close as possible, let it sit until the rings subside, and start a slow steady retrieve. I idea is to move it just fast enough to get it wiggling back and forth, producing the famous gurgling sound.
If you're fishing around wood, do the same cast and pause, then the same retrieve but only a few cranks, and pause until the rings subside and repeat. You don't ever really jerk it hard like a popper.

Took you advice and used a black 3” rat square bill floater and did the pause jerk pause thing at about 7:45 this evening on the outside top edge of the weeds. Second cast got one about 2 pounds and he did hammer it. Got one more that way a little later, then it died. Switched to a wacky worm in blue (darkest color I had in the kayak) on the inside edge and got a bunch of 11 and 12 inchers. A fun night, had to get off the pond at about 8:45, too dark and no lights on the kayak.
