Deciding between 12 & 15 lb test?

I recently went back to fishing after some years off, and I bought 20 lb braided test for my spinning rod. I'm in Southeast Michigan, fishing mainly on rivers and lakes onshore, so bass//catfish//walleye and the occasional pike.

I don't like how short the line casts with smaller lures (I've been using a lot of crankbaits), and was wondering if 20 lb was overkill, and if I should either go 12 or 15 instead? Not really sure what to do... Thanks a lot!

(I have 2 spinning reels one came with a medium rod and the other medium heavy if that helps?)

The line may not be the problem, but the lures may be too light to load the rod properly. A Moderate or Medium Light rod/reel/line setup rated for the lure weight you are using may work better.
Pay attention to the line and lure rating on your rod. Good luck!

I tend to go lighter. I fish your target species with 8# mono.

I agree with the other posts, it may not be the line, but your rod. If it is the line, then I would go with the 12lb. because changing from 20 to 15 is not much of a difference. Just Sayin...RJS

I guess your talking 12 to 15 pound braid. I've just recently decided to really try braid. I can'r see a lot of difference in choosing one over the other. Might be that 12 will cast easier than 15 but no clue. In mono lighter line does cast better. Problem with braid for me is tying knot's that actually don't slip! Of course the stuff is skinny and hard for me to see well to. Put 20# on one casting rod and found it does cast better than mono. Think because it's so limp, just lays on the spool. Now I got the stuff on two more casting rods. One thing I do like with this 20# braid is it allows me to use heavier leader and still stay below the main line. Used to use 10# mono main and 6# leader.

Don use a Palomar knot ez to tie. Just make sure you cinch all line on top of hook eye. I loop gets on bottom of eye it will pull tight but won't stay that way. Top pic is right bottom is wrong. I use 10 or 15lb braid most of the time

I hook the braid to a swivel and do use the Palomar even do the loop over the top. No trouble with it. Have a hard time joining braid to mono though. Thinking just the normal way and tie w knot in the tag on both lines?

I agree. 8 pound, but certainly not more than 12 if going for big fish.

For what you are fishing for, you could easily get away with 8 to 10 lb, although I do not have experience with braid that small in diameter. Why have you chosen braid?
