Fishing Economics: cost/fish (including ER visits)

I bought my PA Senior Lifetime Fishing License two weeks ago and have caught six fish that I brought home for supper. Of course I had to upgrade my equipment, buy several hooks and re-string my rods. A few more fish and I should be able to get my cost per fish down under $150. Oh yeah did I forget to say that it also included two trips to the urgent care clinic? One to have them help remove a fish hook firmly imbedded in my finger, only to have them two days later X-ray my back and spine to determine the extent of damage occurred when I lost my balance and landed flat on my back on a large pointed rock at the river’s edge. In my defense I almost had the hook out myself when my wife almost fainted trying to help and I couldn't finish the job one handed. I was able to push the hook partway back through the other side of my finger but that was all I could get.

So I trekked to the local urgent care facility. The intake took forever as they manually input all my medical insurance information and complete medical history. I could have bled to death from a paper cut by the time they took to get me into their system.

Looking back now on how long the intake took, I’m convinced that the brand spanking new 19 year old Physician Assistant manning the station must have been using that time googling YouTube videos on how to remove a fish hook. She had me seriously worried when she broke out two brand new suture kits, removed the suture from the huge curved needle from one kit and proceeded to tightly wrap the suture thread around the fishhook. I inquired what her intentions were and she responded that since I had already cut the eye off the hook (in order to more easily push the hook all the way through my finger) she was going to have to wrap the thread around the hook now in order to yank it out. The second suture kit was to actually sew up the resulting slit in the skin.

I calmly but quickly suggested that maybe, just maybe, we could first try to finish pushing it together through the path that I had already started in the finger. Between the two of us working together the fish hook cleanly came out the other side of my finger.

When she was out of the room trying to track down a bandaid to finish the surgery my wife suggested that maybe I shouldn't go fishing tomorrow to keep the wound clean. Ten minutes later (I kid you not, and I as the only patient in the clinic) when she finally returned with the bandaid I asked her if it was ok to go fishing tomorrow to which she cheerily responded "Sure". After seeing my wife's disapproving glance she asked her "wrong answer?"

The back will take a bit more time to heal as I definitely have one broken but intact rib on the left side and the doc said there's probably another one or two on the right side that didn't show up on the X-rays. The muscle spasms are slowly starting to abate. Oh yeah, the next night my dear wife thought a good comedy movie would help cheer me up. OUCH!!!! Other than that she has been a real angel of mercy and I couldn't have gotten through this without her.

wow 👏 you know how to hurt yourself good. sorry for your misfortune. My wife heard this somewhere and I never forget it...75% of the people you come in contact with day to day are below average intelligence wise🤡. Another joke she has is what do you call a doctor that got mostly C's in medical school??........Doctor🤣.
Heal up and go slowly. Just sounds like bad luck and gremlins got you.🎣🐟🚫🏥🚫⛔♋ tight lines and pack bandaids.

OK, I have to tell a story. I went to an emergency room after being bit by a musky (yes, it's true). While I was waiting another guy came in with hooks in his hand.

When the doctor (not a PA) saw me, she mentioned that she knew there was someone in the ER with hooks in his hand. OK, but I was really floored when the doctor asked me if I could show her how to remove hooks.

Pretty scary, especially since this was in Baudette, MN on the shores of Lake of the Woods, a million acre lake on the MN - Ontario (Canada) border.

OMG. Glad you’re OK. Those things have happened to most of us fishermen. Cost of fish per pound? Hahahaha
After buying boats, motors electronics, etc etc the cost per pound has to be way up there in the hundreds of dollars per pound! Hahahaha

Ouch on so many levels. Especially the back issue. As for the hook, been there done that. At least you got the POINT, to rest up awhile.

In North Carolina as a senior i purchased my last licenses and it was good for the rest of my life. Never had to get another one. I am assuming PA is the same.

Here in MD it is $ 5.00 a year for seniors.
