What does the knob near the handle/star do, the one that says 10 14 17 20 30 40 50?

Assuming it's a Lews baitcaster, it's the spool tension knob. On the later models there's a feature on it where you can also dial in the type of line and weight which helps prevent backlashing. Here it is on a Lews Hypermag.

What, a southpaw reel? Good job explaining that DC

Yeah I'm right handed but trained myself years ago on LH reels so I don't have to switch hands after casting. Comes in handy on reaction strikes when pitching/flipping!

I stand corrected on the specs of this Hypermag reel! Although the dial itself is the spool tension control knob, the numbers and letters are merely a line/weight indicator so you remember what you have spooled up and in no way tweaks the spool to control backlashing. The braking system is centrifugal--4 brakeshoes, with those settings on the opposite side. So SR, what you initially surmised is correct.

Some rods now have the line weight feature
Oh yeah--who was it--Abu or BPS? I remember when it came out a few years ago; you dialed the butt of the rod to the line wt. Thought it was real gimmicky and I haven't seen it since.

That’s how I’ve always fished w both baitcaster and spinning rod seems like a waste to cast then switch hands cuz like you said timing w flipping is everything
One of the topics with many opinions. I reel spinning lefthand n baitcaster righhand just works for me. Filipping n pitching i also learned to do left or right handed
