My sons 10ft rod needs a new reel and am looking for advice on cost efficient spinning reels.TYIA
r.mcgrail0715: Well, you can buy an elcheapO, and replace it regularly, or you can buy quality and it will last him his lifetime, assuming he gives it proper care. I suggest looking at Shimano reels. Just sayin...RJS
Take a look at Penn. Ive been using them for years. Got one that I bought new around 1954.
Penns last a lifetime, and parts are readily accessible.
I had an Ocuma I gave away, only like UL for the most part. But I have to give Ocuma credit. That was one well built and smooth reel, big too. How big of fish he be looking for? Ocean makes a big difference. As a kid we'd go fishing in Long Island Sound for Flounder and Fluke and started out with Penn level winds. Got a bit older and added Mackeral to it and used Mitchell 300's. I'm not so sure getting one rod and reel is a good idea unless he target's the same size fish all the time. What works well for a Flounder might not be so hot with a Salmon!
I mentioned Ul for Mackeral but I don't think you'd have a lot of use for UL other than that in the ocean. I have a Daiwa J-25 spinning reel that I'd consider for bay fishing here with a 7' MH rod. But the Ocean is a long way off and the few time's I have gone over there ti fish I've taken my ABU 6500 on a 7' rod.
Thanks for all the replies! He will mostly be trying to target stripers off of the national seashore on CC
5000 size and up as he is probably a younger guy and the weight of the reel is inconsequential. At my age weight is the first thing I look at just like my primary care physician. :)
Penn's as mentioned above. Also check out Shimano Nasci if you can fine them

If you're fishing the surf your best bet would be a 5 series Penn Battle or spinfisher with a 4 to 12 ounce MH or H rod in the 10 to 12 foot range.
