Do I need split ring pliers?
Jul 27, 2021 10:51:28   #

I live in the PNW and have / will be fishing for stocked and wild trout in streams and still water, surf fishing for surf perch, and inshore salt fishing.

I’m trying to spend more and buy once as I accumulate gear and was wondering if, when buying pliers, I should consider split-ring ones.

The little bit of fishing that I’ve done thus far hasn’t necessitated working with split rings.

Thoughts?

Only if you plan to change out or replace hooks on your lures. If you do, they're a godsend. Especially small ones.

I concur with others post. You will find it much less frustrating to have a pair. Just Sayin...RJS

It's always better to have the right tool when you need it. Changing hooks can be time consuming if you don't

If only once in a while, a staple remover (jaw's type) works

Sure, get them. They're inexpensive to buy and worth a fortune when you need them.

I use mine a bunch but I’m changing out hooks on crankbaits all the time.
Get a good pair when you do.
The stamped metal cheapies are pretty frustrating

Make sure to check the size the nose of pliers fit your snap rings.

5 STEPS TO QUICKLY REPLACE TREBLE HOOKS WITH SPLIT RING PLIERS [VIDEO]

SPLIT RING PLIERS TUTORIAL:

We’ve had a bunch of members asking us to show you the quickest way to replace treble hooks on your lures.

And even though there are a bunch of videos on how to replace hooks, no one really focused in on the trick to using split ring pliers (like we’ll show you here).

To make it easy for you, we’ve written out step by step instructions with screenshots and posted the video below.

Enjoy and let us know if you have any questions by leaving a comment at the bottom of the post.

5 STEPS TO USING SPLIT RING PLIERS:

Step #1: Find the end of the split ring where one of the coils ends.

Step #2: Open the ring with the split ring pliers. Place the flat part of the pliers into the ring, and use the notched part of the jaw to open the ring.

Step #3: Place the hook between the two coils of the split ring. Once you do this, turning the hook will allow you to remove the hook from the split ring.

Step #4 [Time-Saving Tip]: Place the new hook in the opening between the coils. Since the coil is already open, this will allow you to remove the old hook and insert the new hook at the same time, without having to open up the ring twice.

Step #5: Squeeze the hooks together, turn them and remove the old hook as you insert the new one.

And that’s it! Those are the five easy steps to use split ring pliers to remove hooks and replace them with new ones.

Split ring pliers are a must for more than fishing. My wife askes me to change her car keys on a new ring about every month. (don't ask me why) The split ring pliers save my finger nails for that. Also many anglers don't realize that hooks on lures should be change every year if the lures a used regularly. These pliers are a must for that considering they are not expensive.
