Hi all, recently decided that I need a new hobby and fishing is it. Not very familiar with fishing in western Washington, so any advice would be appreciated like good locations and specific breeds to be looking for to bait and style. Thanks in advance

You sir "surrounded "by fishing opportunities. Been a while since I've been in Olympia and Shelton, and I wasn't big into fishing at the time but every excursion I went on was enjoyable and put food on the table for a meal or two.
I would gear up for trout in freshwater. Salt water (not too far away) would be salmon.
Hang out at a local tackle shop and be a sponge for answers to any of your ?'s.
Good luck and enjoy what the PNW has to offer.

I'll provide answers to specific questions as far as my memory will allow.

Also I remember as a kid really enjoying cat fishing where I grew up and was hoping to find any place around me I may find some. Do you recall any areas with catfish in them?

Specifically no. Pretty much all lakes and ponds have cats in them. I/we just got the urge to go and went. Permissions now vs then are noticably different. Locals (usually good people) will know where to go. Mingle a bit.

I’m a veteran so I’ll probably go to my local VFW or American legion, didn’t actually think about that. Thanks for the advice

Don't know if it's still there but the Evergreen Ballroom in Lacey was THE place.

you picked a good year to start. On odd number years we get a big run of pinks into the sound and up the rivers. I live north of you so not all that familiar with the rivers down your way but if you go into Cabela's in lacy and ask they most likely you tell you where to go and what to use.

The Chinook salmon will be returning to local rivers in big numbers through the next 6 weeks. Good fishing in front of rivers in saltwater (highest numbers return to the Nisqually river) and also bank fishing in rivers as the salmon move upriver.

There are several lakes around, one of which is just south of you Black lake has bass, crappie and trout. Another is Long lake, I fished both of them when at Ft. Lewis.
