I am starting to look at fly fishing for the first time. Trout in the Pacific NW. I know very little about it but want to get started. What do you think about the Cabella's Prestige starter kit $179.00 for the 9054 kit? Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. Enjoy.

That's a great place to start. Decent set up for a beginner. If you live anywhere near an Orvis store they give free classes and they do a pretty good job. Then if you find yourself liking it and you would like to step up your game, they sell a very very good product as well. Orvis will not steer you wrong, they are a good outfit.

I was in Bend/Sisters this week and there used to be an Orvis store in the Old Mill District but they weren't there anymore. Thanks for the advice.

There’s a Orvis in Lake Oswego. 30 minutes away.
Orvis puts out some great YouTube videos if you can’t make it over there.
Good luck in your new endeavor. Your gonna love it.

That’s exactly the same outfit that I started out with flyfishing. You will quickly find out that you need to get better line on that outfit.

Not sure what the Cabelas kit contains but I would suggest you steer towards a 5 weight 9’ rod for NW fishing. I started out with an 8 weight 8.5’ rod back in the 70s and I caught fish but it’s a bit on the heavy side for our trout. I now have a 6 weight 9’ rod I bought off a buddy years ago and it works better but I’d love if it was a 5 weight. I don’t recommend you get too fancy on price until you feel your beginner outfit is holding you back. You can get poor buying more fishing skill. Kinda like golf. You can’t buy a better game.

Good advice Captain. I started with a entry level rod and used it for a couple of years until I was sure I wanted to pursue the sport. Then for Christmas my wife got me a nice Sage 9’ 5 wt. it’s still my go to rod.

Like someone else said on here, when you find yourself wanting to upgrade, upgrade your line - that's definitely the meekest link in those all-in-one kits. You'll be amazed at what a difference it makes, but only after you're learned the basics of casting. What you have is the correct way to start out.

I hope you find it enjoyable. Put in the time and learn the basics, then practice and practice some more. Learning to cast takes some patience and time invested, then you spend the rest of your life learning how to read a stream and how to best present your offerings. Very challenging, but also very very rewarding.
