I am new to the area, Vista, and would appreciate some advice about fishing by private boat out of Oceanside harbor. I have been out a few times but have had limited success with rockfish, halibut and sanddabs. I would like to know more about tuna fishing, ie: where, how and how to find out when they're nearby; I have limited range with my boat; 19.5' center counsel Aquasport. I moved here from Monterey Bay area and am fishing spoiled; lots of big rockfish, lingcod, salmon, halibut, white sea bass up there. I am a Vietnam Veteran and the VA healthcare down here is exceptional. I might be willing to take someone out with me, but I'd be picky as to whom. I am a progressive, liberal atheist.

Thanks! I thought I would weed out those with whom I wouldn't want to spend time, and vice versa. Seems it worked. Any advice on fishing?

Welcome to the Stage Michaelbo. Thanks for that beautiful photo. Nice salmon. Don't know much about fishing offshore down there, but somebody on here might. And I would think if you just meet and talk to people around the harbor, you'll be able to pick up a lot of information. I'd go with you - I'm also a liberal atheist and not afraid to say so. But those discussions are better left in the attic on this forum. That's where all of our talks about stuff like religion and politics are supposed to go. You have to subscribe to it to see it. Just so you know.

If you are after tuna, starting from now to the end of September you may get into migrating swarms of Albacore.
If you are after Bluefin or Yellowfin you will have to go further out , for that you will need an overnight boat .
Check Helgren's Sportfishing for daily fish counts The Oceanside 95 just came back with Bluefin Tuna some of them over a hundred pounds in weight. Inshore fishing as you have already found out you will get Halibut, Sheepshead, Sculpin, Bonito, rockfish.

Well you’re in the right spot for progressive liberal atheists anyway. Good luck. I probably wouldn’t get too picky while begging for help if you expect to get any but if you are that’s the place to get it for sure. Just my opinion.

not sure where oceanside harbor is but since you mentioned up there referring to Monterey I'm thinking it is southern California. I know up our way Tuna sometimes are 20-50 miles out which would be kind of far for a 19.5 foot boat but could be closer in down south. by the way not sure how to respond to "I'd be picky as to whom. I am a progressive, liberal atheist." other than I'm sorry but I'm sure in southern Calif. you will have no problem finding other like minded individuals that are looking for something to do to take their mind off of what California has become, Good luck and hope you catch lots of fish. By the way thanks for your service you served and fought in a time where your service was not always appreciated.

Lucky me.
I moved away from north county inland off of the 78 just in time. LMAO.
