I haven’t fished since teen years. Goin’ camping… want to shore and pier fish in SoCal. Best Places, simple tips will be appreciated! Bought my first Zebco rod and reel yesterday with basic lures, sinkers, bobbers and hooks. Will practice dry casting first then look forward a nearby fishing spot. Getting ready for longer camping trips. Help!?!

Carolyn welcome to the best information source out there. I can't help you from this coast but many on here from out your way. Keep checking in.
Gulp camo sand worm-2 inch variety. Knicknamed - crack. Barred surf perch can't resist it. Good luck.
Don't forget to rinse your gear in fresh water. Salt and sand aren't good for it.

Hi Carolyn, I posted to you on the "California Fishing" post. Great advice from the foodfisher. Where will you be going to camp? We can talk about trout fishing. If you are interested in fishing for perch in the surf, there is a book available thru Amazon - it's by Bill Varney and it's called "Surf Fishing: The Light Line Revolution". Full of all kinds of good information about fishing the surf down in your area. It's about 8 bucks, and you won't regret it. BTW I'm in no way affiliated with Bill or his book, it's just a great resource that I know of, so passing it on to you.

Thanks Foodfisher… I’ll save your tips and figure out the term 🙃
The Gulp sand worm that Foodfisher mentioned is the way to go. It is a killer on sand dabs, sole, halibut rock fish and most anything else that swims in salt water. I even had a friend catch a 20 lb .king salmon on one. I drop it to the bottom then slowly lift it and very slowly lower it back to the bottom. as for my rig, I hook a ball head jig to a pin on the bottom. That way I can change jig weights as needed. I put a 4" gulp chartreuse curly tail mullet on the gig. Up from the jig about 8 inches I tie an inline #6 hook with sand worm. If legal, I tie another hook about 12 inches above the first hook. Another 12 inches up I tie a loop. I tie a swivel with pin to the main line to attach the hook rig to the main line. I use 20lb. fluorocarbon for the jig hook set up. I use the 20 pound as the stiffer line prevents hook tangles.. I pre-tie several rigs so that I can switch out easy if a shark cuts me off. If the fish are up high in the water column, Just attach a large float above the whole rig big enough to keep the rig from sinking. If You can cast out from the pier, then as slowly as you can with the curly tail waving, reel the rig back and repeat. If the Zebco is a push button reel, they do not hold up well in salt water. Go to an open face spinning reel as soon as you can afford one. You can often get a pretty good rig at a pawn shop very cheap. Good luck
Thanks Plumbob, I am already learning how much there is to learn!!!

I will try to get you a drawing out in a few days. The grandkids are coming, so I will be pretty busy shortly.
