Hello, I’m new (hence the introduction). Right now I am working on the Oregon/Washington coast. I have been trying to do some surf fishing but haven’t really had much luck. I have tried the jetty also.
Have you used live shrimp or squid? Worked for me.

I haven’t used those yet. I will try it. Thanks. Do you just go dig up some shrimp to use for bait?
Bait shop will have live and frozen. If you use frozen they are much less expensive at Wal Mart. Same for frozen squid. Besides you can pretty much choose what size.

Don't bother with dead shrimp, just use the live shrimp. "All saltwater fish eat live shrimp and all freshwater fish eat crawlers." But I fly fish, how stupid can you be. Welcome to the Forum!
Tales they are right about the live shrimp being better than a froze shrimp. The guys at the bait shop will show you the way to hook them to fish with. I always like getting my squid from the bait shop too. It is cheaper a Wal-Mart but I have learned that a lot of time their bait has been thawed and refroze where the bait shop will take a lot better care of their bait.
By the way, no question is ever stupid. That's the way we have all learned. You never stop learning if you are a good fisherman, you never know it all. I've been a Capt for almost 40 yrs and still learn no tricks. By the way that statement " All saltwater fish eat shrimp and all freshwater fish eat crawlers " happens to be a false statement. Don't listen to everything you hear you can get a lot of bad information too.
No question about live shrimp versus frozen, however, when live shrimp die in your live well and you have no more live there isn't any difference from frozen to newly dead ones. Also, a new fisherman without a boat/live well may have trouble keeping shrimp alive. THAT is the reason for my first response.

Perhaps, not all saltwater fish eat live shrimp but most of them do. In fact I caught an octopus on a live shrimp. The same is true that most freshwater fish eat crawlers. This statement about the crawlers and the shrimp, I read in a book and I can not think of a fish that does eat a crawler or a live shrimp but I'm sure there are some.
BTW, I was referring to myself being stupid for being a fly fisherman and not using crawlers or live shrimp for bait, no one else. Tight Lines Buddy!
