I just started fishing recently and today, whenever I casted, my hook/ bait would always end up back near me even if I casted out for away, did I do something wrong? There was barely any wind today too.

If your line sinks it will pull your bobber back towards you.
OJ is right and in addition if new reel often the line will be twisted coming off spool which will also promote bait to return. You can try throwing your bait out and then hold the line right above the reel with one hand and reel in putting pressure with fingers on line to try and stretch or straighten a little. Also often after throwing several times the line will quit curling as much.
If using shiners, dace, etc. and shore fishing, the bait will seek out hiding places in the shallow water near the shore.

Hey AC trying a heavier sinker might help keeping the bait closer to where you cast it.Put a slip sinker on and either peg it or put a sinker stop on it to a just the height you want your bait at Good Luck
