When casting a spoon lure with a treble hook do you need to put a bait on it?

Long ago threw a spoon with a single hook and a piece of pork rind attached. Pike loved it.

Yep when fish seemed a little picky added small piece pork rind to encourage the bite like Spiritof27 says.

Spoons are the most versatile lure around, the reason they are still around. Johnson's Silver Minnow has been marketed for 100 years they tell me. Up north they say "pig and a jig", which refers to a strip of pork rind on the spoon. About 95% of the time spoons get hit on the fall and whatever makes that fall flutter or seem erratic is what will often trigger a strike. There just isn't a wrong way of fishing a spoon and we too often forget that.

It does not really matter... Fish can hit either way with a bait or no bait attached, sometimes it depends on how well you know how to work the spoon i.e. ... cast, retrieve fast/slow jerky motions and what have you !

Used a small piece of Bacon on a spoon up in Canada for Lakers with great results , without the Bacon they would follow the spoon for about a city block just about a foot behind it !

Then thumbed their noses at me !
