Has anybody had any success using a lipless crank bait in a river? Seems hard to get the right action unless you are retrieving it directly against the current.

We use them in the Napa and Petaluma Rivers and do just fine. Specially in the Napa where we throw them for stripers, they work great.
Like my good buddy SAW1 stated lipless crankbaits work quite well in Rivers 👍🎣 I use them for the same fish 🐠 in San Joaquin River Stripers 🐟 depending on the type of lipless lure some are used with a fast retrieving to have them work right 🎣good luck and tight lines
No problem on the Alabama River. You need to work it with the current and not against. Can even come at side angles. Fish feed on what is coming with the current and not against normally. I work all baits with the current.
