Recently I’ve been really interested in targeting larger bass. In early October we are having a friendly fishing competition with some friends for bragging rights. It’s a 6 acre pond that has great quality fish. Normally I catch in the 4s and lots of 3s but I know there are 5+ prob up to about 7. What are some baits and techniques that could help me go after large bass. It’s not the type of pond that enormous swim baits seem like an ideal bait. From my research I’m hoping to try some black buzzbaits at night (is this any more beneficial than a whopper plopper?) I don’t know much about jig fishing but I’ve heard they work for catching big ones and lastly I planned on using some variation of swimbaits particularly keitechs. I have had some success with keitechs on an underspin and recently got something similar (owner flashy swim willow). Any advice would be fantastic so I can whoop my friends and claim the crown!

Jigs all day. There are tons of youtube videos on how to fish them but my largest fish have almost all been on jigs.

What’s the best environment for a jig? Like should you fish them near fallen branches etc? Also there are so many different kinds it’s hard to tell how to properly use them. I just ordered a couple with some trailers. Also is there an ideal time of day? Sorry I’m an amateur with them but I keep hearing they catch big ones lol

Stumps, grass, any kind of cover really. Theres just something about that bigger profile for bigger bass. Check out Tacticalbassin on YouTube. I find them to have the best instructional videos on the Tube.

Nah dude no worries! Yes, throw into fallen branches, rock piles, etc. But don't be afraid to throw into open areas as well. I prefer 3/8 ounce football head jigs with neutral color skirts ( greens and browns ) with various trailers. there are too many good trailers out there to name but my favorite is the rage claw. And make sure you have at least one black and blue jig. Idk what it is but if they aren't hitting the normal stuff they seem to like the black and blue. If you arent getting bites change up the speed on your retrieval. I typically do one long pull up of the rod with a little pop at the end and let it fall and sit for a few seconds and repeat. I second the tactical basin guide on jig fishing as well.

If you are allowed to use live bait I would go with that. Minnow under a bobber,minnow free lining, crawfish same way. As far as buzzbait vs whooper plooper you just have to try both. Both catch lots of good bass. Also depends on wether or not your pond has grass or weeds.

what is wrong with threes and fours?
I've fished many a day with nothing larger than a pound
and there are times when we all get skunked
you should be elated to catch the threes and fours
