Fly fishing: Is a 5-6 wt rod heavy enough for steelhead?

My 7-8 wt rod decided it was time to just fall apart so I’m left with my 5-6 wt. I know it’s on the light end, but should it still work well?

My opinion yes, but you better have a reel with a good drag. They will run like hell when first hooked. They don't have a lot of stamina (like most trout), but that first run is explosive and if you don't have a smooth strong drag they will break you off.

I use my 8 weight particularly when I'm fishing big water.
