Just read article in today's Daily press stating that possible world record bull drum was caught in a tourny on June 3rd!! Fish measured127cm. I have pics of myself, my youngest son and a charter boat captain with two bull drum taken around York spit in Aug. 2017. One was 64.5in( 184cm ); one was 60in, the big one was estimated to weigh 65 to 70lbs! I have the pics and citations for VA fisheries dept. So do I hold the world rec for #1 and#2 red drum???

Not unless they were weighed on certified scales and submitted to state or world records

ok, those were the first red drum we ever caught, and we were happy to release two bruisers. I didn't see any mention of having certified scales involved on the boat, fish was released after measuring as per regulations. so I will check out DWR records for state. thanx.

Going to be very difficult to set a new record when anything over 27 inches must be immediately released.

Some states have awards they give for catching big fish. EX, NC gives a citation for a red drum over 40 inches.

I would say records are taken on fish weights not length, that's where certified scales come in for accuracy. I would check that out. I have never heard of record fish being by length

Our state now has 2 record lists, 1old school by weight, and a C+R one by length. I'm sure others will do it as well. IGFA has one too I believe.

Not much else you can do if you have to release them immediately 😁👍

I read that story also.
World record red drum 127cm

Now brings the question of your fish.
Article states his pending record fish was measured with an official measuring tape. IGFA ruler. They will only recognize this ruler.
He also submitted a world record application to the IGFA.
So I believe you also need an official measuring tape and a application for your fish to qualify.

The current IFDA record drum was 94 lbs 2 oz. caught by David Deuel in 1984. It measured 57 in. to the fork in the tail. https://www.sportfishingmag.com/largest-redfish-in-the-world-igfa/. If the fish in the article truly measured 64 in., I suspect it would have weighed considerably more than 60-70 lbs. It was a great catch whether it was certified or not! Kudos for the release! Tom

Just an FYI: except for a release recognition, the fish can not be weighed on a boat, the weight has to be accompanied with a signature from a witness and a certain part of the line and ground tackle must be submitted with the IGFA application along with a few other requirements. That is required to make it official. Official or unofficial, a world record if legally caught is a world record with or without IGFA approval.

Bapabear, I believe the line sample requirements only apply for a "Line Class Record ", ie :Largest Striper caught on 15lb test. The overall largest of species doesn't require line sample. Also all weights must be on a government certified scale, like a a grocery store, or tackle shop, or your local Wildlife officials.

True, but If you are going through the trouble to get an overall record, you might as well get the line class at the same time. It may hold up a lot longer.
