I have some rapala lures (CD for example) and I can't seem to cast them very far. Sometimes I can't get them far enough out into a hole where I know fish are at.
I'm fishing in moving water.
If I add a small weight to the line, I can cast further -- in some cases I can get reasonably well into the hole -- but I'm afraid that this is putting the lure down lower than the trout want. And I'm also wondering if the trout will get spooked by the visual of the weights in front of the lures.
I think a pair of waders will clear this up for me -- removing the need to cast that far -- but I wanted to ask if any of you had some science you could lay on me.

Have you ever heard of loading a lure?

I read that.....the step that made me bust my gut laughing was the one with instructions on how to remove your leader from a splitring without cutting and re-tying
Yeah mostly looking at split shot or weight, we do it with spinners but all those trebles on a rap might tangle on casting
If fishing something like the surf, rig it Carolina style with a 2-3 foot clear leader with a swivel.
I've used weights before with good success. Use at 8" or more above the lure a small split shot. 2 small is better than 1 larger. Fish are use to debris coming down to them. The softer sounds of smaller shot work better as apposed to a loud bloop of a larger one piece split shot.
We all wade but cast farther. An elephant coming toward them verses a small bloop is going to be your choice of which to use.
Small split shot or fly fishing wrap weights are your ticket.
Wikipedia one thing, but hard to argue with Kevin vandam or Jon-Claude for that matter
if you want to cast further be sure your line isn't too heavy and you
have a proper rod for casting light lures. I can cast a country mile with
a 7' panfish rod and 6 lb braid. 8lb mono is probably adequate with a
flexible rod -- the longer, the merrier.
