Lobster ? Nope ! Look again ! This
is a Tasmanian giant freshwater crawfish (aka - Tasmanian giant freshwater lobster); but it IS a
crawfish and NOT a lobster at all !
It is the largest species of crawfish
in the world - although they may look alike, there ARE differences, the main
(and most important) one is taste !

The 'real' Maine lobster still retains
its' distinctive lobster flavor when cooked, whereas the giant crawfish tends to absorb and 'take on' the flavors of whichever spice or seasoning it is cooked with !

(Now, THERE is some tail (and claw) meat for a crawfish pie !)

Over here you know them as crawfish, in Australia they are named freshwater crayfish, I've seen them up in the north of Victoria around 2 to 3 lb. The ones we caught would be around 3 to 6 inches long and over there the popular name for those is yabbies. I think that could be an aboriginal name for them. When we had a good lot of them we would boil up the old wash copper and cook them in there.

To eat a crawdad that size, i'm guessing that a bass would have
to exceed 30 lbs.! Biggest black bass (LM) I know of weighed just under 23 lbs., but stripers grow to over 60 lbs., so it is possible, I suppose !

Wouldn’t open on mine either but we catch some monster crawdads on the lower Columbia. They’re bigger than those little, bite sized, lobsters you get at the grocery store by quite a bit. They call em “river bugs” and they’re dang good eatin too. The bigger ones are 6 inches long down there but not excessively big around. A half a dozen will feed two guys pretty good with all the fixins. 🍺🍺

one big crawdad, as a kid we use to let them pinch us to see who could stand the pain the longest. But would not let that one near me.

Big Stripers love lobster too. The guy who holds our State Record,(and former World Record) at 81lbs 15oz, knows it. He caught his fish on a chunk of Bunker, rigged on one of his patented clicker sinkers. He designed them to sound like a Lobster moving around on the rocks. He was even on Shark Tank, looking for investors. Greg Myerson.

Crawfish or lobster, those pincers
are something I'd rather avoid !
I posted the following story awhile
back - considering the subject
matter here, this may be a good
time for a re-post !

Based on actual news story from
mid-1990s, but exact details may
be a little fuzzy !

One day around mid-summer, a man
walked into a large food market
(Safeway ? Albertson's ?) wearing a large, baggy pair of 'Farmer John' -
type coveralls ! When no one was around (and he was in a spot with
less chance of camera detection)
he grabbed two lobsters, stuffed
them down the front of his cover-
alls and proceeded to walk non- chalantly out the front door with
his ill-gotten booty !

Seems like someone 'UPSTAIRS'
didn't like what he was doing and changed his mind ! Before he had made it halfway to the exit, the
rubber band holding one of the lobsters' claws had either snapped
or slipped off - somewhere down there in those jeans, one of those lobsters had a firm grip on his
'short arm' and wasn't letting go !

Well, now ! Our enterprising 'petty thief' had a big problem on his
hands (or rather, in his shorts) !
The pain was showing plainly on
his face, with big wet tears flowing down his cheeks ! He needed help !
So now he approaches a store manager, blurts out his crime, and begs for him to call the police (and
an ambulance) to take him to an emergency room to remove the crustacean from his 'appendage' !
Cops showed up about 5 minutes
later, cuffed him and drove him to
the hospital to remove the (now unwanted) lobster from his 'organ'
and tend to his injury, then hauled his butt straight into lock-up !

Hey ! Whatta ya know ? It seems
like for this poor unfortunate
schmuck, crime REALLY didn't pay !
HARSH lesson learned !
