Hello anglers, I’m typically a salt angler. I’ve just moved to Upstate NY am looking to catch some striped bass. I was wondering if anyone knew the best strength main and leader line I could use. I’ll be buying some braided main line today and was wondering what strength leader I should use. I did some research online last night and was thinking about using 10lb main braided line with a 2lb fluorocarbon leader. I just wanted your guys opinions before I purchased. I’ll be fishing in the mid river Hudson for bottom feeder striped bass. Any advice would be truly appreciated.

I personally think that is way too light for stripers. We use 30# braid for the stripers out here in California and we don't catch them as big as they do back east. We cast a lot of lures for them out here and we tie directly to the lures with the main line. They aren't line shy. Besides, our water is stained/muddy in the rivers out here.
I lived in Delaware years ago and went to Liberty Park in Bayonne NJ and guys were catching the biggest Stripers I have ever seen. You need a high lb. test main line and a much higher strength fluorocarbon leader even for smaller bass. I use 60 lb. main line braid for salmon and 30 lb. leader and still get lots of breaks. If you are catching fish that big you should use stronger line. Check to see if there are some YouTube videos from people fishing the area to see what they use. I watched a guy carry out a fish that he was holding at his shoulder and the tail was dragging the ground.

Even a 5lb Striper will snap that 2lb leader with 1 head shake. You won't even be able to set the hook in a bigger one. 20-30lb main line, and if you insist on a leader 15-20lb fluoro. Make sure you follow the new Regulations about slot length, and circle hooks for any baitfishing. The fines are BIG.
I use 50lb braid and 40lb leader in the Long Island Sound. Strippers get just as big or close to it in the Hudson. Like Fred said, check the new rules. Circle hooks need to be in line. Off set are no good
Agree what you propose is very light. Been using 30# braid and 25# flurocarbon leader for stripers in the Indian River Inlet in Delaware. Using leader because I fish near a lot of rocks and braid is tough to break when hung up in the rocks. Good luck!
I don't what gear your using so it's hard to tell you much. Here in California's Sacramento River and Delta the stripers run from almost minnow size to over 50lbs. and average 7to10lbs. Stripers are not leader sensitive fish. Out here I use 30lb braided with 15lb mono. Again depending on your rod and real. No way would 10 and 2lbs. work!
