My son and I love to fish saltwater but I'm still new to it we never seem to have much luck. What would be a good surf rod and the best lures to use?

Bucktails with a good trailer like berkley gulp and a teaser hook about a foot above with some kind of soft plastic. It is a summer flounder rig but it can catch a variety of fish like snapper blues, sea robins, kingfish, etc

What coast line are you surf fishing at? Start fishing for small fish and then use some for bait on bigger rods!

Depends on what your fishing for. I use a 6 1/2” rod for fluke and kingfish. A 11ft god for larger fish like stripers and big blues. I have caught big blues and smaller stripers on the smaller rod and it was great fun.

I fish Cocoa Beach with a 8-10’ rod, pompano rig with a 1-2 size circle hook, Fishbites or live or cut shrimp. You’ll want to put your larger, heavier rod in a sand spike; maybe hold your smaller rod for more sensitivity. I catch Whiting, Pompano and spiny catfish. Watch out for the cats.

I fish Texas coast w/ 2 rods, a 7ft medium w/penn 5500ss,30lb braid good for whiting to specks & reds. My big stake out rod is 9ft eagle claw surf beast w/ shimano TLD15 w/300 yds 50lb braid.keep lures simple-gold spoon, jig w/shrimptail or favorite plastic & a 6-8in purple worm! They imitate juvenile eels, specks &reds will bust it hard. Good luck
