What is the best way to catch garfish?

I have never fished for gar, but have caught gar while fising for catfish or something else.
The most common way was with a live bait, on or very near the surface, to suspend a perch or minnow inside a small wire noose. The idea being the gar when taking the bait would have its bill through the noose and when it tightened would snare the gar.
Those I've caught were by accident on a hook. They have no fear since they are the largest of all the fish in thier environment, so they take whatever they want. Just Sayin...RJS

I don’t know how to catch them.
I mean I have caught some 2’ long ones but caught them accidentally. I hooked and pulled in a couple huge monsters that got away. They were like...one maybe 4’, another maybe 6/7 feet long.??
I do not know because I couldn’t land them and the line snapped.
Both at the same place. So I bought some heavy line snd steel leaders and talked with the tackle shop guys and read what I could, then purposefully went back after them.
Haven’t had a bite since. Lol

We catch Gar on the Mississippi river with a small bullet weight above a wire snap. We hook a small strip of white nurses nylon on the snap, (about 3 inches long ) and cast to gar that are moving around in the boil on top of the wing dams. When the Gar munch on the piece of Nylon stocking you have just re invented Velcro . Their teeth get all snagged into the Nylon and game on ! Gar are fun because a panicked Gar can sometimes jump eye level when you are standing up in the boat !

Yes, I have heard of using a nylon rope frazzled out to snag a gar's teeth. Just Sayin....RJS

Catch garfish, look up Richard Gene the fishing machine utube videos.He has a couple of videos where he shows how to make a gar lure and then shows how it works by catching a few gar.

I fish mainly for bass and pike with jointed rapalas but twice had a gar hit my lure and boated him. It was sure a surprise to me. I catch and release.
