Well I'm back from East Lyme. Disappointing day. Weathermen called for 5-8mph breeze out of the southeast, cooler air off Long Island Sound. Instead we got 10-15 out of the northwest, hot wind from inland. Also blowing directly ON the ramp, making launching and retrieval lot's of fun.
Water temperature is higher down there though,67°-68° which should be good. Couldn't find the Bass anywhere, all my usual spots only had small yellow perch, sunfish, and pickerel in them. There's a shallow cove on the northwest side that may be where they're making beds, but the weeds are already so thick, they bog down the trolling motor. You have to pull it up every 3or4 feet, go unwrap weeds, probably spooking the fish in the process. So I had to settle for a couple small panfish and a couple toothy critters.

Sorry you didn't have the day you hoped for Fred. This warmer weather should get them going. Thanks again for your help. Went to Shenipsit Lake and caught my first bass ever, a 14" LM, only fish I caught. See post " my first bass evet"

Thanks guys. Trying to keep an aluminum boat, with a high, light bow, pointed where you want it, is an exasperating task.
Glad to hear that YB, congratulations! I'll check out your post.

I like those pickerel...nice mottling and coloration. Sounds like you had fun despite the weather forecast results that came to fruition. Like they say...one of the few jobs a person can have...get it all wrong, still collect a paycheck and report to work on the very next day to do it all over again (being a weather forecaster)!

I wonder if there is a job title out there to be a "fishing forecaster"? Getting paid to tell folks what "might" happen if they go fishing, but having no responsibility for what actually happens!

Nice photos and a job well done!

Thanks Fishyaker, they're good fighters as well, but very sloppy fish like their bigger cousins.
Now you're talking, that sounds like a great post retirement career, predicting when you'll catch fish.LOL

You know, I saw a youtube video of come redneck guy from South Carolina who was showing the viewers how to fillet Pickerel. According to the guy, pickerel fillets are very firm, and taste really good fried. I haven't personally tried it, but being from Louisiana, I've eaten some stuff most normal people would turn down so I'm willing to give them a try. The problem is that I haven't caught any since I saw that video. Come to think of it, I haven't caught any Northern Pike since I saw a video about to fillet them. They're supposed to be very tasty as well. I draw the line at Fresh water mussels. I tried them once and they sucked.

Yeah Harry pickerel are very tasty, but bony. You could probably quarter bigger ones like you do with Pike, or Tuna.

What the guy in the video did was carefully cut the meat along both sides of the "Y" bone the full length of the fish so that you end up with 2 long fillets per fish, and then fry them up. Is that what you are talking about?

Kinda, on pike they get 4pieces, I'm assuming 2upper and 2lower. Thats what we did on Tuna, 2above the lateral lines and 2 below. Someone on the forum posted the Pike method, but I didn't see it. They definitely said you wound up with 4 pieces.

I'm hoping to go out in the next few days. For most species, we are in the "catch and immediate release only" period. That basically goes until the spawn is over which is around June 15th. But, crappie, perch, and sunfish are excluded from the immediate release restrictions.
