Have a trip planned for northern Minnesota in mid-September. Can anyone
offer suggestions on best tactics this time of year for walleye? Will be
fishing Poplar Lake located off Gunflint Trail. Any and all help would be
appreciated.

Not in the same region, but have done well on 'Eyes in the fall using #5 or #7 Flicker Shad. Also find some Slow Death hooks. Troll those on a bottom bouncer with a spinner rig (or just the hook w/out the spinner rig) and a nice crawler hooked from the nose down to about the first segment. The worm if hooked correctly will spin slowly as you troll it. Deadly. Good luck!

Thanks for your help on the trolling. I have been making my first attempt in tying some spinner rigs hoping that I could use them in mid-September. Bought a few 1 1/2oz bottom bouncers to try. I’ve been wondering if I should also have some 2-3 oz as well.

Welcome to the Forum, Bill. I'm not familiar with that particular lake but most of the lakes up there have a very big rocky bottom and trolling or drifting a slow death rig may work but so would jigging a minnow/crawler rig. I think an 1 1/2 oz. bottom bouncer would be plenty, maybe too much, I would bring 2, 1 oz, 2, 1 1/2 oz. and 2, 2 oz. (MHO)

Those are all great ideas for walleye's. But, stop at the local bait shop and I'm sure they will help you out and let you know what the hot bait is. Have fun and good luck.

Thanks for your input here, this is the kind of advice I’m needing. I will be traveling from Missouri so I would like to have my ducks in a row when I get there. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Dave. It always seems like a stop by the local bait/fishing store proves beneficial. For me it is always a good chance to pick someone’s brain and learn something new.
Thanks again!

You are welcome, Bill. Braid over Fluoro., No more than 8#. size 4 or 6 circle hooks. Good Luck & Tight Lines! Spend a lot of money, we need it. My son lives in Fenton, MO.

Tell me about using braid rather than F/C and a max of 8#. Is this because of so many rocks and braids resistance to abrasion more so than F/C?
Thanks
