Any clue? Caught below Dam on Bull Shoals Lake

One of the fishermen there said something about, if we cut open head we'd find 2 pearl-like stones. Fisherman's tale?

I know not a great picture...

Several other fishermen caught some also & all have what looks like hemorrhoids at the anus opening.

We found some of that at Lake Powell last week as well. It must have something to do with the spawn.

Hey Slug, from what I've heard and read, that's a Sheephead Drum. Not to be confused with a saltwater Sheepshead.

By the look of the scales and mouth, could be some type of carp?

Fresh water drum. They put up a great fight. We don't eat then because they are loaded with bones and have a strong taste.

Drum are delicious but you have to know how to handle them, the stones in their head are actually called balance crystals and are located behind the eye just below the top of their head. Place on ice as soon as you remove hook and fillet just like any other fish. Use jet nozzle on fillets until no foam is noticed in the tub you rinse them in. They are light flavored and very edible, just take a small amount of extra care with them and you will be good to go !
They are not bony, have the same bone structure as a Bluegill.

Thank you, everyone. I think the consensus is Freshwater (Sheephead) Drum. My wife is excited now to catch one & get the lucky stones... :)

Younger brother has caught freshwater Drum out of the Missouri River; North Eastern Nebraska while fishing for catfish. Was actually talking to him on his birthday when he caught one!!
