If you are fishing on the bottom in current you will feel a tug tug on your line, sometimes your line will start to move away, but sometimes the current can feel a bit like that too. If you are fishing in a lake the bottom doesn't move so it would be a fish or could be a crab. If you are fishing with a bobber the will move or bobber will go under, but that could also be a snag in current. You have to just practice and keep trying to get the hang of it.

Setting the hook does not cost you anything. Great learning skill. When you hook in to a fish(es) you will know which tug is what. Especially a swim bait or spinner bait but definetly when plastic worm fishing. That was the best teacher I could have ever had. Didn't take long because I was letting a lot of fish get off and never knew it.
