I made the decision awhile ago to jump full on into kayak fishing. After researching them to death I pulled the trigger on a new Ascend 12T at Bass Pro. Got a no-drill rack for my truck today and installed it. I'm picking it up Friday after work and taking her out Saturday for her maiden voyage. I've rented kayaks but this is my first I've owned. I'm going to take a couple of rods and a small bag of tackle but mostly just getting a feel for it so mostly paddling. Next will be the fun of accessorizing her. I'm mostly a bass fisherman but I enjoy anything fishing really. I saw a cool rig using pvc to convert the two rod holders into a multiple holder. Then, fish finder(saw one onlinethat runs on AA's. I like the idea of not schlepping a battery), a crate for the back, anchors, etc. I'm pretty stoked. Any ideas that have served anybof you well are most welcome and appreciated.

Hey Jim congrats on the purchase, fellow yaker here too. You know we expect pics once it is outfitted right?

In the mean time can you post the name of that AA fish finder you mention. My interest just perked up 50%. Its early yet otherwise it would have been 100%.

It's kind of small, but I'm curious nonetheless. Might be worth trying.

That's what I'm thinking. Even if it doesn't tell you much, it might give enough information to be worth the compromise. If it's lame I can always return it. I haven't ordered yet...still researching options.

Garmin Striker 4 is also an option. Comes with a small rechargable battery.

Fishtrax 1X by Hawkeye uses 4 AA batteries and lasts about a dozen or more trips

You can get a small 12volt batteryto run a regular fish finder. The batteries are used to power exit signs in buildings or back up batteries inhome alarms. Ran a small humminhbird fish finder ( walmart 100 bucks) on my kayak. Battery and a small charger was like 35 bucks. Worked great.

Good luck, be careful to keep from getting wrapped up in gear lanyards. If u dump it, the lanyards can make self rescue difficult. Done quite a bit of fresh and salt water fishing from yaks and it is a blast. Go get’em.

I was looking at those at Bass Pro today before I picked up my kayak. You get a lot more functionality when you spend a little more money and twenty bucks gets you a small battery. I think that's the way to go. Picked up a pfd that won't interfere with paddling, got the seat and cart put together. Going to eat a bite, grab a couple of rods and head out to the regional park and get her wet.

First trip was a success. I need to dial in my unloading and loading routine, but it was a lot of fun paddling around. I'm going to be sore tomorrow though. Spent a good two hours out, stopped to throw a bladed jig around a little. Lots to learn...casting angle is different, and it was a little windy. I have a couple of small anchors that I think I'll rig so that I can fish a piece of structure. Need to work on getting up on my feet, too. I saw something about using a rope to pull yourself up but I'm 6'5" 230.....I've got a lot to learn but it's going to be a blast. Time to dig into YouTube.

Hey Jim,

I did the same thing last year, right at the beginning of the pandemic. I have been out only a few times since, but learned a couple of things that might help. Get a cheap bungee type paddle retainer (Amazon) and snap it onto your yak. That will make it easy to turn loose of the paddle quickly. Also, remember to cover your whole body with clothing. I still have a sunburn on my lower legs from three weeks ago. I ignored the the area between my wading shoes and my water pants. Cheap socks would have saved that. Need a good hat and face protector, too.

Hope that helps.

It's got clips for the paddle already that hold it out of the way. I have several of those Columbia SPF shirts and sunscreen. Definitely going to get me so ling pants that dry quickly though. And I have a wide brim hat with the cloth that covers the back of the neck. Missed a couple spots on the backs of my hands though. I won't make that mistake again....

JimH,

I use the fingerless exercise gloves to protect my hands. Need em to paddle anyway. Still kind of hard to cover the wrists between the shirt and the gloves. Someone should make a fingerless glove that goes up the forearm under the longsleeve SPF shirts.
