Just setting up a Lamaglass X11 with a Diawa Tatula CT 100XS baitcaster for Salmon/Steelhead. Is it worth using Fluorocarbon vs. Mono?

I prefer using fluorocarbon as a leader only. Past experiences lead me to believe Flouro has too much memory to be used as a main line. You can use mono as main line and add fluoro as a leader and reap the benefits of both (and probably save some $$$)

Hi my name is Jack. Dont have the right answer just what I have found out. I wanted to know what line to use to make my own leaders for fly fishing. What I found was fluorocarbon is more money and believed to be better just because of cost in my thinking. U get what u pay for. I have heard fluorocarbon sinks better for fly fishing if you want fly to go deaper. But I sean a well known guy test the line and mono was stronger and better with rubbing against a rock or something. So I would say depending on what u are using line for . In your case I would say mono its cheaper and maybe stronger. Good luck

Hello Johnny. Fluorocarbon line will get your lure down deeper than mono. I use baitcasters almost exclusively & only use fluro as a leader with power pro braid. Most fluorocarbon lines are stiffer than I like & memory prone. My fishing buddy is using Sunline fluro & likes it so I may give it a try. This whole fishing experience is all about getting a system down that you are comfortable with. Whatever it is you're using, if it works for you, stay with it. Tight lines.

Yea flouro has a lot of memory and mono has more. Braid with flouro leader is what I use nearly 100 % of the time for bass , crappie , walleye
And braid with single strand wire leader for musky.

Don’t get me wrong , folks have been using mono since it first came out. I think in late 40s and I used it myself for years and caught a lot of fish
But since I’ve found a braid that works well in all conditions , that’s all I use on all my gear.

Has really upped my game

I have switched to braid with flourocarbon for leader. As you can tell from the different responses, different folks have different ideas. I think you will find flouro will be difficult to control. Just Sayin...RJS

Thanks for the advice. Just curious how long of a leader do you tie?

I usually start with a length as long as my rod, but not so long that the knot enters the top guide of my rod. That way, I can cut and retie several times and not have to replace my leader. Short answer, anything up to almost 6 ft long to start, and as you change lures you will sacrafice a little each time but still have enough for several changes. Just Sayin....RJS

A thought on fluorocarbon memory. I saw someone do this on YouTube yesterday. I haven't tried it myself but it sounds good. Undo the end of your leather belt. Fold the end over so the backsides are facing each other. Pull the fluorocarbon line through the leather to remove memory. Obviously this is for leaders not 100+ yards of main line.

Been fishing with mono over 70 yrs now and can't say I got one reason to change.

I have had some really bad experiences with Fluorocarbon. Ruined one Canadian trip where I wound all reels with it and had terrible birds nests and had no mono to replace. very expensive experiment. Too much memory. I do use it for leaders on all my gear.

There are only a handful of fleuro's out there that are supple enough to use as a main line... seaguar Tatsu is probably the best... that being said, it's unnecessary. Learn an FG or alberto knot and run braid as your main line with whatever necessary leader material. You'll save tons of money on line... Mono for top water baits and fleuro for sinking baits. There are times where I'll use mono on lighter line techniques just to take advantage of the stretch as a shock absorber (jerk baits, spy baits and ned rigs)... Salmon and steelhead, I'd probably be running a good 12ft leader of mono for the shock properties, with fish that still get hot next to the boat a longer leader will allow you to get the knot on the reel for less chance of knot failure if she charges at landing time...
