Somebody once told me that line can hold up past it’s # test. I don’t doubt it but for example what do you think it would take to break off 10# braid?

Well, 10lb line no matter if it's braid, mono or fluorocarbon, means the breaking point is 10lbs. Most will go over though.

The kids at Salt Strong line tested 10# J-Braid (8 strand) and were surprised that it tested at OVER 20#! Thats an incredible underatineing of breaking strength. Line listed as AGFA Tournament line is the only line you can rely on breaking at its rated test.

My 10 pound Power Pro far exceeds it's rating. It sometimes straightens hooks when I recover snags.

Funny I just read about this a guy who caught this enormous smallmouth on 12lb trilene and he was going for the state line record but didn't get it. When they tested the line it's breaking point was something like 15lb and he got the record for that line class the line rates I am giving are not the correct ones but if you look up smallmouth bass world records there is some great reading material of the breaking point of lines

2005 IGFA tournament in Cabo san Lucas all fishing was done with 30# Momoi hi vis mono. Many striped Marlin over 200# were caught. I got 7 and straightened 2 hooks. my understanding of line break ratings is one end of the line is fixed. A rod and reel combo act as a clutch the does NOT fix one end of the line. If you keep breaking your line you don't know how to fish.

If you know how to use your drag and handle you rod and reel it is amazing how you can catch heavy wgt fish on light line.!!
Know how to set your drag my largest trout was 6 1/2 lbs on 4lb test line and that was last year at Virginia lake Eastern Sierra. Just don't rush your fish in play it.
Good fishing to all and safe trips on the water.

Sure does seem like break strength is underrated when you are trying to break off a snag.
Sometimes I feel like I’ve snagged a submerged Sequoia and it takes considerable effort to break off.

Our local hero of the past decade landed a 71lb Chinook salmon on a fly rod, while steelhead fishing.....on 7 1/2lb leader !
Now that's putting your gear, your angling-sense and your patience on max, for sure.

And then there's those who regularly use 50lb+ braid to chase a hoped-for 5lb Largemouth. Keeps the tackle/line makers happy. Encouraged by the volume of desire, they'll keep offering "new and improved", "smaller, yet stronger", "stealthiest to date" until the end of time.....as long as it can be profitable and we keep in constant quandary over "am I doing this the best I can for the $$$ I've spent ?"

Good luck out there ! "The best is yet to come !"

LOL......

Flip that 7.5lb line in the middle of a bush and it will explode on the hook set! Actually, you will break off a lot without a fish because when you're fishing bushes, you will get hung up often & you're not going to troll right up to where your hung, you have to pull on your line to get your bait out. I've snapped 65lb braid doing such. I won't flip bushes with anything other than 65lb braid. Just saying.
