Sorry to even ask: You're wading, got a fish on and you net it. What do you do with your rod while you release the fish?

Sorry for what I assume is a ridiculous question but I can't find answers by searching. Once you've got the fish in the net, what do you do with your fly rod when trying to release the fish?

Do you walk to shore to set down your fly rod? I imagine I'll spook the fish a bit if I'm in a lake and found a good spot but I can at least safely rest my fly rod while keeping the fish safe and in the water while I free up a hand to remove the hook.

Go ahead and rest the rod in the water? Fly rods aren't water proof and this would completely ruin the reel, right?

Master the use of your arm pits and secure both the rod and net while your hands handle the fish and fly like a T rex?

I'm guessing its my first solution above but just had to ask here. Excuse my ignorance and I appreciate any response. I'll be lake fishing with waders for the first time this weekend and realized this was a question I didn't have an answer for.

Fly rod or bait caster, either i would try the arm pit maneuver. Keep the net tethered to you in case you lose it while de hooking and pit the rod. Or worse case walk on back to shore if it is a keeper.

Armpits, Yeah I use my armpits
and be very careful.
Ive also gone back to the bank
sometimes. It all depends on
my attitude that day.

You could also stuff the handle in your waders as another option

Yeah I like the down in the waders method. Gives at least 1.5 hands to work with.

Do a Google search for wading rod holder. There are several options.

Go to https://aventuron.com and check out their 3rd hand rod holder. I love mine. It’s especially handy when tying on tippet or eqleasing a fish while in deep water. Tight line.

The 3rd hand attaches to the belt on your waders. Once the fish is in the net you just pop the rod in the two clips of the 3rd hand and now both hands are free.

Reel goes into your waders right against your chest. I push my reel and rod butt down to around my belt. Both hands free to unhook your fish. Something I learned at a fly fishing class 20 years ago in Wyoming. Give it a try.

When your fishing solo and you have to net your own fish the arm pit maneuver is really your only option unless you have a belt on with a rod holder attached to it LOL I do not like to set my rods and reels down on the ground at all got out of that habit a long time ago

I keep my net on a lanyard and with a magnet let it hang from behind my neck. If I need to have two hands free I tuck the rod under an arm, the one that has to do the least amount of movement. I use a hemostats to grab the hook in the fishes mouth to unhook while it’s still in the net. My fishing vest has a loop with Velcro that would hold the rod across my chest. I also see some that balance the rod on the back of their neck. Rod holders on your belt, etc are a good idea.

I just tuck it under my arm. But as someone else said they sell rod holders that go on your belt.

I’ve used the store bought belt that contains a rod holder for that purpose.
