Sounds like drag too tight. You also might want to use FG knot for connecting braid to leader - little to no issue running through guides.

The leader was damaged by the fin of your last fish

Drag set tight. Fought for about 2 minute in the current then popped. I usually pull in 10-15 lbers with that drag easily. Spool of line pretty new. Was only second trip with that spool of line

Not in MANY years, about 40 years. I’m sure it’s still great fishing 🎣 though.

Your very fortunate most every fisherman has lost a nice fish or so they thought it was a nice fish some just weren’t hooked good it happens you buy quality gear, line, hooks proven knots and it still happens that’s fishing

You should be “geared” for the largest fish possible. This is usually overkill but I use 40lb braid with 50 lb leader when fishing for stripers. I don’t want to lose that 50 pounder if lucky enough to hook one. This served me well when I hooked a 100+ cow nose ray in the surf at LBI NJ

I believe the biggest reason for break offs is improper drag setting you can catch a very large fish on light line match your equipment to the fish your targeting for the most fun you don’t hunt elephants with a BB gun or rabbits with a cannon

Even on the smallest of micro light rigs.

Music to my ears.
