Near-record brown trout !

Here is another fishing article
I thought might interest some of
our members !
Eric Torvinen of Duluth, Minn. was
out fishing Lake Superior with his
dad and brother just off-shore from downtown Duluth when he hooked
into this beautiful, near-record-sized
brown trout ! The trout measured
34.5 inches and weighed in at
14.25 lbs. !
The actual Minnesota state record brown trout measured 31.5 inches
and weighed 16 lbs.12 oz., so his 'brownie' was not far short of the record !
What happened to the fish ? It was filleted and served for family dinner !
(Yeah ! I wasn't too keen on that outcome either ! A trout that size is rare, and it deserved to be released !)

I was wrong on that one we do go by weight. Dont know what I was thinking.

The guy that taught me how to fly fish trout, Black Bill, caught one in the South Branch of the Whitewater River that weighed 14 #s 7 oz. and it is mounted in Mauer's Tavern at this time. He caught another one the same day, that was 5 #s. He brought them up to my Grandma's front porch in a gunny sack, and said, "Here Mary, fry these up." My Grandpa Matt said, "Whoa, wait a minute, let's think about this. It turned out to be the MN. State Record at the time. And Ol' Blackie wanted it fried up.

Coming in second is the same as losing in my book. Eating a state record, without checking to see if it is any kind of record, is just part of catching a fish. He must have not been a fishing sportsman. I have never had any near misses so I’ve never thought about it. If I ever do I’ll do what I’m supposed to. I'll measure and weigh it, take a picture of it, release it and give the info to the State Parks and Wildlife.🤥

Hi, Hack !
I wouldn't consider it 'coming in second' unless he was knowingly
and deliberately competing for first
place against someone ! Catching a really nice trout that just 'happened'
to be a little short of the record is
still pretty impressive in my book !
I do agree with you about taking
a photo, getting weights and measurements and releasing it !
As a matter of fact, that is how
I would deal with any trophy-sized
fish I may catch, rather than getting
a replica or having it mounted !
I would prefer having a good photo blown up, framed, and a nice gold plate mounted on the frame giving
the 'vital statistics' of my catch !
