The smaller ones are. 16 to 18 inch. Best grilled on the half shell. The larger they are the more parasites and blood line.
I agree, I have only caught saltwater drum.

But the 30 to 40 inch or more are a blast to catch
White, beautiful meat, recommend electric filet knife. Done lots of fish fries with them feeding them to people that thought they were trash fish and no good that loved it when they didn’t know what they were eating. Caught them by the boat loads literally at choke canyon lake on jigging spoons ie cicada or gay blade.
Fourchon is correct. Stay with the smaller Bladk drum and you will be fine. Just Sayin...RJS

If you’re talking saltwater, I don’t like them. That’s the only place I’ve caught them. Too many worms and bones in them. I don’t like the color of the meat either. I’ve never eaten any so I don’t know how they taste.

Yes. 18” to 20”. Release all over 20”. Saltwater black drum are nice to eat. I suggest skinless filet and then cut them into nuggets or small strips. Use fish fry mix. I dip in milk and then batter. Electric frier set at 375 degrees. Two minutes in the frier max.

I have had larger ones and cut the worms out of the meat. Great tasting when batter dipped and deep fried.
Black Drums aren't my favorite, but they are great fighters and fun to catch. I would listen to those that recommend black drums unver 20 inches for eating, the larger ones catch and release. Just Sayin....RJS
drum caught in the surf under 10 lbs are great fried. i wouldn't eat them out of brackish water.
I’ve only caught black drum in salt water up here in SC. Usually from surf or from an inlet to the ocean. Thanks for your suggestion.
Here in SC we are supporting conservation efforts to “release over 20” trout initiative. Personally I release everything unless I plan to eat that fish caught the same day or the next. The release over 20 derives from the gulf states fish kill this past winter.
