What are you fishing for??? I fish for trout, bass, and from the beach for Barred Surf Perch, Halibut, and Stripers among other inshore fish species... I only use artificial lures... I havenโ€™t used live bait in over 25 years ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿค™

Live bait can be very effective, but it does depend on the species, too. What are you trying to catch?

To your question, " Is live bait better?" generally YES, but there are problems in acquiring live bait, it takes a lot of time, or expense to collect live bait, even if it is available, and often it isn't. While a lure (even the rightr type) is expensive, the reasons lures are so popular is they are ready to go instantly when you tie one on. Just Sayin...RJS

It is not legal in most fresh water cases in Washington.

Either can get expensive if you lose it

If live bait is available to you and you are not tournament fishing, it is always the best alternative in my opinion. "match the hatch" has been true for many years.

You can use live worms in Washington can't you? Ya can in Oregon just not live fish. I can catch some fish and clean it and use the gut's or I can catch one and filet it and use the filet. What I can't do is use a live minnow. There's a private pond not far from here, member's only, that was stocked with hatchery brooder trout. Got to fish it one time and it was pretty good. Then a member's kid turned loose some gold fish in it and it got over run with them. Not worth a hoot for fishing any more. That's why Oregon say's no live bait. yet as I understand it the crappie in Prineville Reservoir were illegally released fish and boy did they take off! Nobody is complaining.

Crappies can be caught on minnows, of course, but Crappie Nibbles by Berkeley Powerbait work below a slip bobber. Small 1/16 and 1/32oz jigs tipped with small plastic tubes, tails, scrubs and minnows work, too.

Just remember to set your bait about a foot above them as crappies feed upward!
Good luck!
